Babies

Jeff Clark Aug 17, 2005 09:36 AM

....This morning I had a litter of BRBs. The mother was born here 8 years ago and she is a little over 6 feet long. She was just delivering the last of the litter when I checked on her at 9 this morning. There were 23 healthy babies, 5 stillborn and 2 slugs. This litter is later than usual for my BRBs. The last time I observed this female being bred was the 14th of February. Most of my litters in the past have been born around 5.5 months after last observed matings. She had been bred by three different males in early february. I have quite a few other gravid females that were also breeding in february and into early march and I was beginning to worry about them. Looks like no problem and the longer gestation may be due to subtle differences in the temperature in the cages.

Dave,
...This litter is a little different than usual. Most of my BRBs are born with large yolk scas attached and I let them sit in the membranes with just their noses out and absorb yolk material for several hours. These babies had no yolk material and crawled around like crazy from the start. In the past when I have had stillborns they are often in litters with lots of slugs and the female has trouble delivering. What I saw of the last of this litter being delivered looked like she was having no problem pushing them out in a hurry. My guess is that this litter is a little past fullterm and the 5 stillborn ones had broken the membranes moving around in the last day or two and drowned. I have to start packing for Daytona.

Jeff you mentioned you saw three males breed her. Can you tell by any of the babies characteristics that different fathers produced them? (-Such as unique pattern or obvious color differences-) We had a good show and I was glad the people came back after the rough time all had last year. Take care and give your family our best-----Richard, Samantha and Lexi
