Breeding?

cammyleon Aug 17, 2005 10:19 AM

Are ball pythons hard to breed? I am thinking about breeding them but I don't want to spend all this money on them if I will be dissapointed with the outcome of no babies or just no breeding at all. Thanks!

Nothins guarnteed... If you put the right amount of time and effort into breeding you should end up with babies. There are guys who produces 100's of clutchs of babies a year so its not to difficult mainly just have animals of proper age and weight, read and learn about the process and be prepared..

This was my first year breeding - and I must say it went fairly well and was surprisingly easy (knock on wood). Whether or not future breedings will go as easy I haven't a clue most likely not - it seems like for every success there is a failure in this industry. So my suggestion is to start maybe with a normal or inexpensive pair see how it goes - if all goes well and you enjoy what you are doing then you can throw some money into your venture - if you don't like doing it the you haven't lost your shirt.

also take into account things don't always go according to your plan. Ball pythons eat when/what they want. I have a het female that will only eat mice and then she went on a fast, so I don't think she will make the next breeding season(which was my orig. plan). I also had another female who went on a fast right as I got her almost to the min. breeding weight, she then lost some weight as she didn't eat for 6 months and she wouldn't have anything to do with my male so no eggs from her this season.

another of my females is still holding out on the eggs, though I think she will give me some sooner than later.

so just be prepared for all sides

ps it is worth it to see those little heads coming out of the eggs!!!

""ps it is worth it to see those little heads coming out of the eggs!!!""

Exactly...it's surreal when they peek out.

As far as breeding for money goes?..This is the way i see it.It's a gamble,period...but i've kept so many odd critters over the years,i felt i would do well at it.This was my first breeding season and i hatched two clutches. So now, here i am wishing i bought in years ago,but i may not even do as well next year either.
In other words,i wouldn't advise it,unless you enjoy the time spent with the animals.Otherwise, you will more than likely not be happy with the end results. However,if you are the type of person with drive and an attention span, then start reading. The net has all the answers, just a search away.

..."Are ball pythons hard to breed" compared to other snakes?

Has anyone bred Balls and other snakes?
What are some of the differences?
Which do you find eaiser?

Thanks,
Ken

They are no harder to me than cal kings or a lot of colubrids.... (these are possible double het for albino and Nerd Line orange ghost)

Short answer is YES. For example, while I have limited experience in breeding ball pythons I am dedicated to caring for my small breeding group. This year has been the first year of production for my group of 6 female het albino and 2 male albino ball pythons. 5 of the 6 females successfully produced this year with clutches of 5, 7, 7, 7, and 7. All eggs were fertile, all but the last clutch of 7 has hatched, and zero slugs. The one female that failed to produced is, in my estimation, just too damn fat! She is on a crash diet.

The 'secret' is the set up. The way that you house and heat your ball pythons is critical. If you want specifics on my approach, then feel free to inquire. However, it's pretty standard.

How big of an enclosure so you have for your ball pythons? Do you keep them individually? How do you provide your heat and what are the temps? If there are any other tips let me know because it would help me out immensely!!
