fat frogs

sleepofapples Aug 17, 2005 12:37 PM

i have 5 gray treefrogs both Hyla chrysoscelis and versicolor in a 50 gallon tank.. and one green treefrog.. they seem to getting quite fat lately.. i havent changed anything that i am feeding them.. usually put around 30 large dusted crickets in once or twice a week.. should i be feeding them less? or do they bulk up for cold weather? seems a bit early for that.. ive had them since march and its only in the last month or so that they have gotten overweight.. it mostly seems to be the females... at first i thought maybe they were going to produce eggs.. but so far nothing.. not sure how that process works anyway.. ive never bred treefrogs before.. ive seen them amplexing a few times but nothing has come of it so far.. and the green is a male, no females.. and hes still massive..

has anything else changed? different food items, or their appetite? how many crickets do they eat each, per week? large or small?

i havent changed thier diet at all... large dusted crickets usually twice a week.. i dump about 30 in the tank and let them have at it... dont really feed them anything but crickets... when i first got them i fed them wax worms once a week.. only about 10 at a time...but i only did that for about a month.. after the smaller ones got a little more weight on them i stopped... the only change i can think of is that about two months ago i moved them from a 44 gallon to the 50... they seem to eat about 5 or 6 each... kind of hard to keep track of whos eating what with them jumping around and attacking the crickets...
