Feeding a Western Shovel-Nosed Snake

scalybabies Aug 17, 2005 01:05 PM

My daughter fell in love with a western shovel-nosed snake. I did some research and found out that they eat insects, spiders, scorpions, etc. Is it worth a try to see if it will make a good captive or should I take it back to where we caught the little guy? He was caught at White Water California. Are there any shovel-nosed snakes kept in captivity?

There is no doubtedly shovel-nosed snakes in captivity... as to how successfull the attempts are is another matter. If you are a novice snake keeper I would suggest taking the snake back to where you have found it. (provided it has not come into contact with any other captive snakes)
If you would like to persue this, then perhaps contact Dan in the venomous forum... he goes by oxyrhopus or something like that... I think it's the latin name for the inland tiapan. Anyways, this guy keeps over a 100 species and is very successfull in keeping some rare and difficult colubrid species.
Before I wish you luck, I will have to suggest captive bred animals over wild-caught for pets. Better for the animals, and better for you, the owner... it's just plain easier.

Have fun with whatever you decide!
