Deparatizing frogs/toads...??

foreverfrogs Aug 17, 2005 06:54 PM

I'm thinking of purchasing a Marine Toad soon but the only ones sold here in the UK are Wild Caught. I was wondering if anybody has wild caught amphibians themselves and if they're concerned about parasites is there a specific readily available treatment for deparatizing them? Or am I being too overly cautious? Any views and opinions greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
Russ

I would consider holding out until a captive bred specimen is available. Wild-caught animals can do well in captivity however.

If your husbandry is optimal than parasites should pose minimal concern. If the toad is stress by handling, shipping, viewing, or sub-parr husbandry than it's parasite burden will overtake the balance. Deworming should be done under the guidance of a veterinarian. There are a few good ones in the UK, unfortunately, probably the best one, Dr. Hernandez-Divers has moved to the USA.

At least you don't live in Canada; herpvets are even more scarce here

Thanks for responding. I'll definately bare that in mind. Unfortunately captive bred specimens are unheard of in the UK. Nobody can seem to stimulate the breeding conditions over here. I have read that it is quite difficult.
I was really after a female Marine Toad but surprise surprise, nobody in the UK has females only males. Unbelievable!
