Speckled Eastern King (and it's NOT an OBK)

BlueKing Aug 17, 2005 10:35 PM

Not the best outdoor pic, but here is my wildcaught 4 foot+ female Eastern King from Lake City, Columbia county, FL. She has nice bands (the pic doesn't show it too well) that extend all the way to the belly and white speckling in ALL of the dark interspaces (kind of like a weakly speckled OBK - Of course the OBKs usually have more crossbands and much more speckled appearance).
Should be breeding her with another speckled (Lake City) male like her owned by Nick ("Foxturtle", next spring. Post a pic of your male one more time Nick, if you're reading this! Thanks

Wow. Thats stange. Because here is a second gen hypo florida king x eastern king that looks very similar. The adult parents were the first gen breeding result and they looked very red compared to what they produced.

This is a first gen baby. It has a lot of red and yellows on all that I produced. What surprised me is when these to siblings get bred together they all of a sudden produce these black and white offsrping. WHere did that come from? Definetly an intergrade zone there.

If second gen offspring produce something very different looking (something i have seen with hybrids for years) this would probably explain all the goini (or whatever u want to call them now) and OBK ect that are a taxonomic nightmare. Well they might not be a nightmare yet but I think they will be.

Very well put and very interesting Rainer! I have looked at those before and they are very nice looking! Do you have any of those left? I'll be in Daytona on Saturday. . . Thanks

The reason Blaney sunk sticticeps was that in other areas where FL and Eastern kings came together you found snakes that looked like the OBX kings. He reasoned therefore that the sticticeps pattern was a remnant of a "floridana" type population that was isolated on the outer banks until sea levels dropped and they were genetically swamped by getula (much as goini appears to have been).

Seeing those intergrades with that pattern and the direct captive cross seems to confirm the origin of the sticticeps pattern.

Neat looking snake. This getula was found by a friend of mine in Baldwin County, AL. It has some of that speckling but not as much as your specimen.
I'm looking forward to seeing the babies that project produces.

The Baldwin co. animal's spots come from holbrooki infleuence rather than the floridana/"brooksi"/"goini" type influence that the Lake co. animals have. They are very cool nevertheless. The head of the Baldwin animal looks just like a spec. I have found 2 dors on I-10 (that are now in the LSU collection)from just E. of Mobile bay, but both only had a few specs in the mid dorsal area on the anterior part of the body. These natural variations are very cool!

That's a beauty! ! ! Thanks for showing that pic! I like those easterns with the speckling - adds an extra touch of diversity!

A CB03 GA female that I got from Keith. The speckling is mainly in the first half of the body. Interesting.
