PVC Caging ?????'s

GOLDSREPTILES Aug 17, 2005 11:06 PM

I was curious if anyone was aware of different methods of making a cage out of SOLID PVC sheets not SINTRA. I am curious if it can be drilled and screwed, or PVC cemented to the point it will be stable. I ran into a great deal on a lot of partial sheets and figured maybe I could make new cages myself similar to all of the manufactured cages I see now days. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Anthony

I was planning on making racks with that material, but thick sheets are just toooooooo expensive. I will try to make cages with 3/16 CPVC wich is just a bit more expensive than 1/4 PVCX to see how it goes since its less absorbant than sintra(note that Sintra brand is especially more absorbant than other bran since it has a verry porous surface, that why i build my cages out of celtec).

Give it a try! you can use the same pvc glue tha you would use for PVCX, altough the smooth surface is resistant to solvant, i would make sure that i weld the rough edges together instead of surface to surface

I have never used CPVC sheet, but I that sounds backwards to me. Do you have a link where I can read about bonding CPVC?

I have not used it myself, but the industry standard for making ducts, cabinets and tanks from this material is to join panels together with PVC angle. Thermal welding is also used.

There are some issues with solvent welding this material together edge to edge.

Screws might works on material 3/16" thick and greater, but I would still back up the joint with PVC angle.

cpvc is a LOT heavier tough than pvcx. The advantage i see to this material is that it resist a lot better to scratches and the surface is verry smooth. Also PVCX (especially the sintra brand) will leave water spots if you spary the cage or when the animal defecate...

Any idea on where I can find the angle brackets you are talking about? I assume you are talking about a bracket that allows you to connect two sheets in a 90 degree angle. Do you reccomed using regular PVC cement like plumbers use on pipes? Will these brackets be strong enough to make a 4'l x 2'd x 18"h enclosure. If so where can I find PVC tracks for sliding 1/4" glass doors, or 1/8" doors? If so thats what I would like to do. With the amout of sheeting I can get I'll be able to make about 20 cages!

Thanks

It can be drilled, and screwed just like plexi glass take it easy and put tape over both sides you are drilling, the better way to do it what i do and use liquid nails.
