Brookesia

deven Aug 18, 2005 12:27 AM

i've been able to find a breeder who says she has some Brookesia species for me. only a few males though so my question is can these be grouped together? 3 males? what types of territories might Brookesia make for them selves. sorry i don't know the species but will find out tomorrow.

Are you certain they are brookesia? You could house a couple males together … in a 40-50 gallon enclosure that’s pretty well planted. Housing more then one in anything smaller will most likely kill the less dominant one(s).

i don't go by gallons as i build vivariums for a living and most of our projects are based on square footage and the speceis which would determine the landscape. i've planned this for a 5'L x 3'D habitat.

no, i'm not sure. i've asked for photos but nothing yet. i'll compare them to what i know and post close ups here if need be.

thnx.

Wow that enclosure is huge. I would think that would be fine for 3 males - but dont quote me. I would love to see pics, very few people have brookesia in the states. From my experiences a lot of the times people dont have what they say they do.

There was a site that i came across that gave pointers for figuring out what genus of chameleon one owned. does that right a bell?

50 gallons for two males!!! Comon I think you could keep a lot more than that in a cage that size. Deven check this article out it might help http://www.chameleonnews.com/year2002/sept2002/brookesia/brookesia.html.
Good luck,
Matt

Matt,

I have a 50g with two male R. brevs and they occassionaly square off - 50g is not super huge either even if its heavily planted. Of course we are talking brookesia here but I really think the same applies – males will be males.

“Comon I think you could keep a lot more than that in a cage that size”

A statement like that really makes one think you don’t know what you are talking about. “A lot more”? F’ing please. Comon yourself dude.

Your right roo, I don't know what I'm talking about. Never kept Brookesia or any chameleon for that matter but I have done a lot of research on the genus and from what I can tell Brookesia can be maintain in colonies in relatively small cages without any problems but then again I have never kept them so I don't know for sure. 50 gallons just seemed huge for two Brookesia espescially since I have read that they are not aggressive to each other.

“50 gallons just seemed huge for two Brookesia”

I totally agree as well, but what I was getting at is that more then 2 (or possibly 3) males are too many in one enclosure like that. Throw as many females in there along with the males as you want (ok within reason). My 50g has a 2.4 group of brevs; I just wouldn’t want to put more males in there. Occasionally the 2 males meet and the smaller less dominant one runs off. This is fine for the most part but having a lot of males in there will create more of these encounters and in the long run this will create stress which inevitably leads to sickness, lack of eating/drinking, then death. So I think we weren’t on the same page when it comes to the number of animals in one enclosure – I was referring to males alone while I think you were referring to both males and females. So since there was a misunderstanding here, I take back my rude comments. ; )
