tandrag Aug 18, 2005 09:37 AM

if you listen real closely you can hear them chewing

Other than that, silence. They don't have the ability to make noise like crickets do.

As for the smell, if they die they can stink a little but nowhere near the smell of crickets. Generally they have what I consider a light, pleasant, fruity smell. My husband thinks I'm nuts cuz he says they stink! It's just the smell of the cooked chow or mulberry leaves, very organic plant sort of smell.

Much quieter and much less smell, whether you like the smell or not, than crickets.

The amount of noise silkworms make really depends on what you have them housed on. If egg cartons or similar paper products, you sometimes can hear them trying to eat the stuff. or just moving around on it (but t his noise is by no means loud, unless you have very sensitive hearing). Other than that, they make no sounds at all.

Their smell is practicaly nonexistant, except for mulberry, which to me smells similar to fresh cut grass though not quite as intense. The only time there are bad smells is when mold is allowed to grow on their poop or they die. They do need to be kept very clean and poop and uneaten food needs to be thrown away every day.

The moths, if you let them coccoon and breed, can be a bit noisy when beating their wings (they can't fly but flapping their wings seems to be part of their display) can be a bit noisy if they are brushing against paper.
