Swollen eyes on Box Turtle

kulkat Aug 18, 2005 09:56 AM

This morning I found my Female Box Turtle with totally swollen eyes. Not sure how long she's had them. I took her inside and rinsed her face for awhile, I noticed her eyes are starting to open, but they do look pussie. She's inside now, so I can watch over here. What else can I do or put in her eyes?

If you see pus then take her to a reptile vet ASAP.
Sometimes the eyes close temporarily due to lack of humidity but more often the problem is that they're ill & need medication prescribed by a vet. Pus is a major indication that this is a bacterial infection.
What do you feed this turtle? Do you use vitamin powder on the food a couple of times a week?
Lack of proper vitamins is generally what makes this problem begin but bacterial infection almost always follows so the way to fix this is see a vet first, then work on diet afterwards.
They don't get better with home treatment but I've seen many turtles begin recovery very quickly when they've been treated by a doctor.
With the right treatment they live, without it they don't live. Get to a vet, do what the vet says, then let us know what happens. Good luck!

Now - I live in NJ. I've owned this Box Turtle for about 8 years now, in fact, she's the mother of all of my hatchlings.
I know you are not allowed to own Box Turtles in NJ, but the Vet can't take them away from me, right?

I live in new jersey also. as long as you have a permit you're allowed to keep turtles. Heres the adress to the NJDEP where you can get the forms for a permit.

By the way, some vets will check for a permit, some won't. If your vet asks, tell them you have a temporary permit and are waiting to recieve your real permit. A little fib won't hurt.

I noticed that this permit is the same permit as the one I got for my Chameleom years ago. It says on there all you have to do is add your extra animals on there when you get a renewal, and you don't have to pay any extra fees. Okay, sounds good, don't think I never got any renewals after 2 years of owning the chameleon!!!(Its been 5 years now!)

lol the permit for your chameleon (hobby permit) also applys for you boxie. You are allowed to obtain a species that is indigenous to NJ, as long as it is not wild caught from NJ or bought in NJ. I know its all confusing but hopefully i could help.
