any idea what type of scrub python this is?

Tenor Goddess Jul 17, 2003 12:46 PM

Greetings Everyone!

I just got this little scrub last week from Kyle Walker. Yasser, I know you looked at it too so maybe you and some others could tell me what type this little one is.
Kyle says he thinks he's for sure a Southern Scrub but is there any way to tell exactly what locale/species he is?

Here's the most recent pics of him (taken last night). He wouldn't sit still, likes to roam when I open his tank...but you get the idea.

He's gorgeous and very sweet ONCE he's out of his tank. Even then, he only rears up a bit until I hook him out and then once he is out of his tank, he's like a totally differnt python. So sweet and docile. :D
If you can't tell in the pics, he has a flecked black and red background (I compare it to a granite burmese python) and an ivory/cream belly (I love that contrast!).
I don't know much about scrubs yet (I'm learning though) so I was wondering if maybe from the bars across the back of his head....Barneck scrub possibly???

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Amanda

Fifteen foot head hunters with one heck of a reach...but they are just so bada$$. I own several, and although no where near full grown offer fun and excitment with every interaction. There is just something about them that no other snake with the exception of their closest relative the Boelens has done. They totally facinate me in everything they do. So many localities to pick from, all sorts of colors, patterns, sizes, and attitudes. What else could you ask for. Not common, not easy to breed, a snake for a real hobbiest not someone that want to make a buck.

So Yasser is with Spitfire Reptiles...ah, I've been drooling over their little Scrubs (the cute little patternless red ones) for as long as they've posted the ad!).

I said at first glance of my scrub...he's cute, he's tiny (yeah everything grows up) and as adults they look badass...I have GOT to research these guys...my main influence was not just his looks...but everyone I've talked to raves about how exciting they are to work with and how intelligent they are. I have "dog tame" snakes (man that term is so abused by some people) that are total lap rats....but I don't expect every animal or snake I get to be that way. Sometimes the ones that keep you on your toes are what keep you motivated to learn forever. :D

I can't wait to learn about this little guy (gotta get a name for him) and work with him. He ate the very night he arrived without a second thought (as apparently in the reading I've done thus far, they are eating machines...they'll fit right in with me. haha!) and he's just been great.

Just like I love the Macklott pythons (all three locales) and I plan to breed them all once I get more space. Talk about a severely underrated python!

Anyway, thank you so very much for the contacts and their sites...I'll be looking them up all weekend! :D

Hugs and many thanks!

Amanda - we'll have more pics soon!

If it is unknown as to what the locale is, you may never know. It could be a Biak as well...one of the rarest of all of the scrub races. They look nearly identical to Southerns although geographically, the two races could never mix. It is a better possibility that they are descendents of the same parent form from way back when.
I passed on the snake because the pics provided were not very conclusive for me to even make a guess as to what it was. I wasn't about to buy a snake I could not see.
I am glad to see the big interest in Scrubs...it's about time! Folks have been missing out on these gems for far too long.
Have fun with it.

Too true. I'm planning to take way better pics of him soon out in the sun so we can see what he really looks like. :D
I just took a bunch tonight and I'll post the best tomorrow so keep your eyes peeled Yasser!

BTW, I saw your website...beautiful scrubs and yes, I think I'm getting hooked on them just the same way I got hooked on Macklott's pythons. ;D

I also LOVE the red phase Solomon Island Tree Boas. (I hope I got the name right on that).

Hugs and I can't wait to get your opinions on this guy once we get better pics.
