Social Dragons

ladywhipple02 Aug 18, 2005 11:45 AM

Okay guys, question. I'm looking into purchasing a dragon and I'm currently in contact with a breeder. She has quite a few babies for sale and they're beautiful. However, she tells me that dragons are social creatures and that they should be kept together... that one dragon alone will not be happy. From what I've read on here, this isn't true. What do you think?

Dragons are not very social, most only come together for breeding. There really hasn't been any studies of bearded dragon behaviour in the wild, to know for sure they do stay in groups but the consenses is they fair much better individually in cages. It is possible to house 2 to 3 females with a male or without a male in large enclosures (large being 6'x3'x2' or larger) but many complications can arrise, stress, fighting, massive amounts of eggs, spread of diseases and parasites etc.

Just wanted to add that babies can be housed together, so long as you dont notice any aggressive behavior towards each other, or one dragon eating and growing faster than the other. None the less, its not a good idea to house BD together after 6 months of age.

Mine are very happy together. I have only seen them scuffle once, and that was my error. Just give them enough food, and enough space to hide, and they co habitate happily. I often see them sleeping side by side.

I would recomend a pair, or trio if you can get large enough tanks. (One male, two females)

And when I say large. I meant really large if you do intend to keep them together.

But after reading your post again I realised you were just asking not intending to do so.

I had 2 females about the same size. They seemed very happy together then out of nowhere I came home to an injured dragon. She almost lost a toe and they were only 4 months old. they always had plenty of food and space. They now live happily in thier own enclosures.
