Separating my tortoise

kgl Aug 18, 2005 12:16 PM

I have a pair of sulcata; both of them are about 7 year old. The male is 22 inches and 50 lbs, the female is 25 inches and 85 lbs. They have been housed together ever since I got them. The male don’t seem to have any interest in breeding with the female. Since they where housed together for the passed 6 years, a breeder advised me to separate them for a few months and I should see breeding activity.
I separated them two weeks ago. The problem was that the female became less active and refused to eat after the separation (even her favorite food). But the male is fine; he’s still as active and eats as much as before the separation. I finally give up and put them back together yesterday, the minute I put them back together the female started to eat and as active as before the separation.
Has anyone experience this with his or her tortoise?

Sorry, I don't have any experience with this because I only have one tortoise but from what I've observed they are creatures of habit.
When you make changes in their routine they aren't happy about it. You made a huge change in her routine so she wasn't happy & that doesn't surprise me.
