Rodents, rabbits, and pigs... oh, my!

ladywhipple02 Aug 18, 2005 02:06 PM

Did someone post a nutritional guide on here awhile ago... it had all the nutritional differences between rats and mice and rabbits and such. If so, could you repost that? I'm interested in seeing it again! Thanks!

I'm sure you'll find it in a quick search, but the differences are minimal. There are way too many variables to consider. Smaller prey items digest faster. Larger prey items have more nutrition. Fewer prey items keep a BP hungry with fewer skipped meals. Five 20g mice do not equal one 100g rat because a BP may get tired of eating after four mice whereas a 100g rat may be a good meal. Like I said, there are way too many variables to consider. Neither one is "better" than the other. Each is higher in nutrition is some areas, but lower in other areas. And it all depends on the individual mouse/rat. What was it fed? Is it lean or chubby? In other words...

Read the comparison. Consider it. Then feed whatever your BP likes best. Rats. Mice. It doesn't really matter.

I don't have the data or the scientific info you wish

mice are good..rats are good maybe better....and rabbits are high in protein and low in fat for human consumption so I would imagine they are great for snakes too...

guinea pigs and syrian hamsters are fattening so I guess they have more fat content than the other stuff.....

chinese should be good yet not too fattening unless they are fat and old......as with russian hamsters......

I use all the above...

these last couple weeks I have used a bunch of rats and mice and fed some of the big boys and girls hamsters and pigs.....

man have they blown up in size.......

I hope they empty out soon............after 2 pigs a med rat and 2 large hamsters my one girl looks like she has 20 eggs in her.....*and she already laid 10.........

.........

feed what you can get .......

IF I could get live rats all the time I would use them......

Thanks, Tosh, for the repost. This was for a friend who has a Burmese. She wanted to know the differences between feeding rabbits and pigs. I knew I'd seen something here to that affect, but couldn't remember. As for my snakes... the two adults eat rats, but the baby won't take anything but mice. And like you both said in a round about way: I'm just glad they eat! Thanks again!

Looks like Tosha had the info you wanted

I would like to point out that even tho most people reserve rabbits for the larger pyhons & boas, ALL of my Ball Pythons LOVE properly sized rabbits. I just recieved a snake today (Thanks Chris!!!) that was a "recovered problem eater", less than 12 hours after arrival he is happily swallowing his first rabbit... F/T at that!!! I do offer rats as well, just to make sure they don't become picky eaters.

I tried rabbits, easier to get here, heck I'd breed them for myself but my balls won't touch them. Hard enough to get them on rats.
