ANOTHER petco rescue..please help

riiotgrrl Aug 18, 2005 02:54 PM

I wnet in to petco today to purchase some feeders for my snakes. (that is about all i buy there). THis is the petco i used to work at, so one of my past co workers (he is a really good guy and hates the place about as much as i did when i worked there) was telling me about the idiocy of the associates that work there. I guess that a few days back he had lost almost and entire shippment of GTfrogs and half of the whites they had there becase someone didnt read the spray bottles and decided to spray them down with cleaning chemicals. SO, as we were looking through the frogs, i found one that was still alive, but not looking well. So my friend let me take him home. So her ei am now with a whites that has the follwing symptome:

he has no coordination, he moves in circles
his eyes are dialated quite large
he seems weak but not hopeless.

i understand that these symptoms are synnonimous with pin worms, but in seeing the others in the enclosure (and knowing that they come from sandfire farms) i am assuuming that it is brain dammage due to teh chems.

Presently, i have the poor bugger in a small round encloseure with a small waterdish and a dish of frogmoss. The substrate is paper towel for now.

I have soaked him in a water solution with reptisafe aqua conditioner, stress coat, and some activated carbon.

I am going to heat up his enclosure a bit to simmulate a bit of a fever. This helps with other reptiles too.

When i worked at petco this happened before, and the vet said there wasnt much they could do.

If you have ANY info or tips, please please help. I want to save this little one. Thank you!

I agree that the problem is not pinworms. He definately looks like he is toxing out. I think you need to continue to soak him in dechorinated water, preferably spring water, for extended periods. The reptisafe is a good idea, too, but I would do away with the carbon and stress coat. It may be too much for his system now. Change the water several times a day, though. This is the best way to try to rid his/her system of the chemicals.

I dont know about the extra warming of the enclosure. I see what you're trying to accomplish with this and it makes sense, but I think that at this stage, his immune system wouldnt be up to dealing with the added stress of the increased heat. I think it would be more beneficial to keep the frog at optimal temps , humidity, etc. than to further stress him.

I also think you need to have a word with the management about this. This type of incompetance is unacceptable.

Best of Luck.

That makes me sick to see what some irresponsible person did to that frog let alone the others that they killed. If only people would stop supporting this chain stores by buying their livestock. Pet stores like this need to not only train their employees more thoroughly but pay good employees anough to keep them. I have worked in pet retail and it is lousy how they treat their employees as disposable labor. there is always a fresh batch of eager young (and usually inexperienced) people wanting to work for them.

with the responses to the fact that there is major incompitantce in these stores. I worked at this particular store for almost 3 years and i have seen this particular incident at least 3 other times. I was let go for being too much of an animal activist and knowing too much essentially. Going to management does not help in these cases, unfortunately. The management is just as incompitant as the idiot that did this. There are indeed a few employees there (the manager that let me take this guy home for instance) that are COMPLETELY devoted to thses animals, but no matter what they do they cannot stop all of this from occuring. I know because i was in this spot before. It is tough dealing with uppermanagement and a constant influx of eager and 'know it all' new employees. In no way am i sticking up for this chain....BELIEVE ME....but i am giving props to the chosen few who deal with this ignorance on a daily basis.
I have contacted that particular manager and given him the info i have recieved thus far in hopes of saving the rest of the animals.
What i did find out is that the incident happened yesterday. And the enclosure hadnt been yet changed when i contacted him....
So the fight goes on. I have rain chambered the little one (i have named him Sifaka) for 4 hours today, as well as given him 1/2 of a cc of diluted a/d hills. I hate to stress him with the feeding, but he appears to have some minor liver damage (swelling in the belly...adeama maybe) and i want to stop anything furtther.
his color is better and he is a bit more active than yesterday. And he can hold his head up now. We will see with time. Thanks for the replies.
