Remembering Ty Kubin 11/06/1964 - 08/13/2005

BILLY Aug 18, 2005 04:56 PM

I am posting this here cause many of you may have known Ty Kubin. For those who do not know, Ty Kubin died last Sat. night, 08/13/2005.

Ty Kubin may not be familiar to some, but to the herpers in the Dallas, Ft. Worth area and surrounding areas, he was well known for being a huge breeder of herps in the 90's. He supplied pet shops all over, including other states, with snakes and other herps. His old company, EMI-Reptilia, produced the hide boxes and water dishes that were either gray or tan that had the plastic outer layer surrounding the base of the product, to help keep it better submerged in the aspen bedding of herp cages. These products are very prevalent in many herp collections to this day. Along with that, they also sold aspen bedding, and made custom order wooden cages.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ty in 1994 and was shown the huge breeding warehouse he had for his company. It was unbelievable and had colubrids, boids, and pythons of all sorts. I didn't know where to begin looking! LOL! He also was such an encyclopedia of knowledge, answering my herp questions with precise details and then some.

Ty really loved snakes and herps and basically all animals. He was an example of a true herper. One neat thing he did was produce the first, to my knowledge, true actual striped lavendar cal king. He worked very hard for years on that project, admist others.

Ty was also one of the funniest guys I have ever met. No matter what time of day, or whatever was happening, he was always cracking jokes and making me smile.

I will miss my beloved friend Ty very much.

This is so sad. He was my first supplier of aspen and I also talked to him about texas snakes as well. Sad.

What happened? I knew the Kubin brothers in the early to mid 90s. I remember when Ty got married... They had great herps and if you were low on cash but had some beer they were always happy to cut you some slack.

The brothers were my first exposure into the mass breeders as was Stan and Andrea Grumbeck. I wish nothing but the best for the Kubin family.

Take Care,

Steven

it was short on details, but indicated that "in lieu of flowers, send donations to the American Cancer Society" which would suggest that he died of Cancer of some sort.

Ty was a big influence on me as well, he introduced me to the North Texas Herp Society. He gave me a tour of his mini warehouse set up, sold me several snake cages, many of which I still have and sold me my first captive breed snake, a desert kingsnake. I was so impressed I set up a spare bed room up as a mini version of his business. He was a good guy with a big heart, always willing to help me out, answer my questions and give me good deals. Ty was a talented artist too, he did lots of herp related art, my favorites were the very close ups of snake scales, and he also did some illustrations for some books. He was a good guy and he'll be missed by many.

If you do a Yahoo search for the Fort Worth Star Telegram and then click on obituaries, and type in his last name, you can read it and then sign his guest book and include any thoughts or wishes you might have.
