Making a new basking area...any suggestions?

iluvturts Jul 17, 2003 01:07 PM

Our tank currently has a natural cork basking area. One of my turtles is getting too big for it, so I am trying to come up with an easy way to make a good basking area, one that they can swim under and climb onto easily. I want it to be like a 'shore' area. I know some of you are more creative than me...will you please post some pictures of your basking areas and let me know how to make one like it? Thanks!

I am too!

Isn't it annoying how lots of set-ups you see on the internet are so perfect? Like how the heck do they find that perfect rock (or other)? It's frustrating when trying to stack rocks 13 inches high any it just doesn't work...

Well thats the bind I am in right now. So I'm thinking maybe do what austin's turtle page said and get a large peice of plexiglass and do something something then stack rocks on top of it lol

Or I was visiting http://lllreptile.com and they have some cool stuff there. I was especially looking at this awesome cave:

http://lllreptile.com/v2/content/catalog/?section_string=cage-supplies&category_string=plants_-caves_-and-accessories&product_string=jumbo-pet-tech-boulder-cave

(copy paste) It's really big so I might get the one a bit smaller. It's so large that Im thinking it could also double for a basking area if you elevate high enough! Maybe something like put a few bricks underneath, cover it up with substrate so you can't see the bricks, then place the cave

I don't know exactly how good that product is so if anyone has it, please let me know

Thats exactly what I use as a basking area. I have one of those caves elevated by bricks. Works like a charm. The fish hang out down there when Bicho is basking, and Bicho hangs out down there when he's just hanging.

Wow cool! Just curious what size did you get? Is it possible to give the measurements and the length/size of the cave opening? is it big?

This is my basking platform that I made from plexiglass. The ramp is a little steep but the silicon layer on the ramp allows for easy climbing. The most annoying part of making this platform is cutting the plexiglass. Just an idea about what you can do.

GRR... Since Tripod won't let me do the pic, you can see it by going to http://akc106.tripod.com/pics/fred/IM000569-570mix.JPG

I use an inverted plastic tray suspended on the water surface using fishing lines as their basking area. You can find such trays (used to hold misc. household items) in stores like Target, Walmart, etc. I position an underwater platform right next to the inverted tray as a step for them to climb on. Hope this helps!
