thinking of buying a new snake...

natalie_jane Aug 18, 2005 09:47 PM

I just got my first snake a couple of months ago, a very handsome yearling Sinaloan milksnake. I like him so much I'd like to get another snake, but I can't decide what kind.

I'd like a snake that's cheap (under $100), relatively low-maintenance, and medium-sized - 3-5 feet. Right now I'm considering another milk or king, or a ball python. Any other suggestions? Something unusual would be cool, if it's not too pricey.

As usual, I suggest the Savu python. They are very under-rated and interesting in both behavior and coloration/pattern.

It is a personal decision and I would suggest you take a bit of time. Browse through the classifieds here and elsewhere Look at all the snakes being offered and see what types are in your price range, look interesting, or in any other way stand out to you. If you see something you might like get on the internet and in the forums and find out if the temperament, size, care requirements etc. are compatible with your interests. I think you will find quite a few interesting options.

OR

You can simply do what many of us do. Compulsively buy everything you want until you run out of money, space, and time, then say “OH #$@% what have I gotten into here”.

Thanks. Right now my top choice is a Mexican black kingsnake, because they're cool-looking and apparently pretty docile and easy to take care of. Someone in Portland (where I live) is selling an adult for $60.

I wanted to rescue a Calabar burrowing boa from a petshop in the mall, because it looked miserable, but I don't think that's a very good motivation for buying a pet...

I had a Mexican Black Kingsnake awhile back but he suffered a freak accident with his enclosure which was ultimately fatal. It was a good snake, very calm, docile, and nice looking. Be careful about handling it if you have handled any prey items including your other snake. One day I picked mine up after handling another snake and before washing my hands. He opened his mouth and grabbed on to my thumb and would not let go. I had to hold him and my bloody thumb under a cold tap to get him to release. Had I cleaned my hands of any snake scent I am confident this event would not have transpired. I can not think of any reason not to recommend these snakes.

I am now the proud owner of a 5-foot-long, one-eyed Mexican black kingsnake named Poncho. He lost the eye due to being fed live prey.

His owner is getting rid of his Lampropeltis snakes, so he sold me Poncho and a homemade cage for $90 all together.

I am not exactly sure what the word in the subject line means, but congratulations on your new snake. It's sounds like you got a heck of a deal.
