havoc Aug 19, 2005 03:38 AM

Hey yall, new here... and new to hondurans aswell. Always liked the milksnakes though! I have a genetics question i hope someone can answer. Am i correct in saying if a tri colour honduran bred with a hypo honduran the offspring will be tri-coloured het for hypo ????????? I understand the basics of genetics but have always worked with corns.

Thanks

I think maybe why im a little confused is that i dont know whether when calculating, the tri colour should be regarded as normal. I think it would be though, its dominant compared to the recessive hypo gene... isnt it. So then if the offspring hatch out to be tr-color hets, when bred together the next generation of offspring would be tr-color hypo's and not "normal" hypo's.

Am i correct?
Just for the record i have seached the site for info...

Thanks

Your first question : " Am i correct in saying if a tri colour honduran bred with a hypo honduran the offspring will be tri-coloured het for hypo ?? "

I assume that the adult tri-colour is not a hypo and its mate is what you call a "normal" hypo? While it is true that all offsprings will be definite het for hypo, you might get offsprings from this first breeding that are not even tri-colour. That is because the original adult hypo may not even be genetically tri-colour. Now if you breed the offsprings that are definite het for hypo, the clutch from this next generation can throw in either tricolour hypos or "normal" hypos (tangerine hypos).

Your next question on the next line: " So then if the offspring hatch out to be tr-color hets, when bred together the next generation of offspring would be tr-color hypo's and not "normal" hypo's? "

Even if you breed the hondos that are tri-colour het for hypo, they have better chances of coming up with tri-colour hypos but it still can thrown in "normal" tangerine hypos, and can still throw in non-hypos or the wild type look.

The pic below is my female tricolour hypo that is ready to breed early next year but I want to point out to you that some her siblings in the same clutch were just tangerine hypos or what you call "normal" hypos.

Thanks,

Ray
