Part 1 questions

vanillag Aug 19, 2005 05:03 AM

Ok I included a picture for anyone that can use it, or help me identify which type.

Well to start off. He seems to be enjoying himself. I got him at a petsmart, he is a baby. Well I have a few questions that probally will have to include detailed answers. I would like to know which type he is but thats not a detailed answer question. Well anyways, about a week ago I was looking for him and he was in his hide with shed point just about straight of his head. So I helped him get it off, and he was back to being playfull. Well He had some just hanging over his right eye. So I did the q-tip and was hellping him get it off. He didnt like it at first, but when he understood I was helping he sat still. Well as I was getting it jsut about all off, he scratched over it and there is a little piece hanging over his eye which there is no way I could get it without hurting him so thats no go. So my question for that is Will it eventually fall off? Or do I need to do something else (vet, and I guess you cant really soak his eyes). These next two questions I have are about feeding. 1. I get the small crickets that he has to eat. How much exactally should I feed him? I was told 2 a day. I feed him three some days. But I don't trust the pet store and I know you guys know what you are talkign about.

2. I was told you can't feed him the mini crickets can o crickets. So are live crickets the only I can feed him or can I get the other? Any other feeding types are welcome, I am willing to take all advice to make sure he is healthy. Another: (sorry for all these) His coolside stays 65-76 degress, and his warm side stays at about 90 degrees (temp gauges are located above the middle of the tank). It's in a 20 gallon tank so is that good? I use a 100W infared buld for his lamp, I didnt have much luck with the heating pad. I use the moss with his humid hide. and I have a half log hide (from the petstore also) on the cool side. It doesnt sheild much light so I took some reptile carpet and cut him a hole to go in and he seems to love it. I hold him every other 3 days are so, tonight after I was good to him by rubbin that shed off, I held him and he wanted to stay on my hand. I guess that is about it. So any information then hit me with it. Thanks guys in advance.

Babys eat 6-8 daily adults eat 10 every other day

first off get rid of the reptile carpet, your leo has a high risk of getting his toes caught in it. just use a layer of paper towels. second give him up to twelve crickets, he'll eat as much as he needs. when hes and adult same deal but not too much of courase. dont give him dead crickets, there is so much nutrition lost because they are dead, its way expensive, they will only eat living things. you can feed them mealworm(dont worry what anyone tells you they cannot eat through your leos insides) and when he gets to be about a year he can start eating superworms. there are others here who can suggest other insects such as silk worms, roaches, and baby mice. wax worms can be used as a treat not a staple diet, they are too high in fat. as for your she problem i would suggest a vet wist. if he hasnt been to the vet yet its a good idea to take him anyways and get a check up and fecal exam to ensure there are no parasites, its better to get rid of them before your leo gets sick. feel free to ask any other questions, hope i answered all of them. good luck, and let us know how things go with his eye.

Riano the repti carpet is covering the log and their toes won't get caught on it.

Vinillag- Just wondering, do you keep the lights on at night? Also you can most likly get the shed off that is covering his right eye as long as its not actually touching it, then you'd have a problem. Just use your finger nails, don't use tweezers or anything like that because he might flinch and you could poke his eye. The pet store was wrong once again, you feed them as many as they will eat while they are babies. You can also feed him small mealworms, small silkworms, and since you got him from a pet store i recommend feeding him a wax worm or two every feeding so that he gains weight more gradually than feeding him 8 or so waxworms once every week. Give me your email address and i'll give you a couple links to good insect companies since i dont know how kingsnake feels about posting links. Then you can send me pictures of your leo and i'll post them. Good luck.

sorry misread that, and also sorry i was told that their nails get all caught up in it and have a risk of falling off, but hey there are so many rumors and so much faulty information when it comes to reptiles. sorry about that.

My email is vanillag@gmail.com. I use the reptile carpet too yes, but he seems to be alright. He runs around with no problems at all. So I think he is cool with it. I fed him about 5 today and thats all he wanted. I got a bigger thing to keep crickets in so I dont have to go every other day. I was told to use so dust to dust the crickets atleast once a week. But I beleive 4 or 5 is enough for him because he is getting fat. I cant get the small piece around his eye, but if he just uses his mose to rub it im sure it will come off. I use the infared 24hrs. my temps stay stable. I like to keep it cold in the house so it has to be on. During the winter time of course I am probally going to have to use a lower wattage or something.

vanillag Aug 19, 2005 09:11 PM

Is it too early to start dusting his crickets? And is it normal that he will only eat 5 or 6? He would probally eat more if allowed more time. I would also like so more information on the "treats" for him, these different worms and everything. Otherwise he looks healthy and is playfull. He likes to chase crickets and seems to have a ball with it. I plan on getting him checked out soon. I saw something pretty bad at the petstore today too. At the petsmart I went to there was a baby leo like mine, But his belly region was 10 times skinnier than my leos. They keep all these leos together. I bet he isnt getting fed for that reason because there are leos almost ten times bigger than he is in the same little container.

rinoa05_1987 Aug 19, 2005 10:28 PM

you can start dusting tham right away, and yeah pet stores are disgusting arn't they, i've tried to get a few in my city in trouble but people really dont care about animals, to them they are just pretty little decorations you can throw away when they get sick of it and thats why its better to educate people than to trample all over them, or correct them instead of telling them they are stupid and dont know what they are talking about.

Feed as much as he'll eat. I do this up until almost a year...but that's just me.

Dust every feeding for young'ns and juveniles. Feed them every day. Keep a separate jar lid or shallow container of just calcium (NO vitamin D3!) in the cage always.

Adults and large sub-adults slowly begin to eat less (well, most!) and do not need to be fed every day or supplemented/prey dusted every day.

I may be wrong as I'm no expert, but I am raising 2 hatchlings (2 weeks old now), and have done extensive reading/research and my 1st thought of that pic is ... that cricket is awfully big. I feed my babies 1/4"-1/3" crickets, both are eating about 12 a day right now. And from everything I've read you should let them eat as many as they want everyday. I also read that the reptile carpet is fine. That is what mine are on and have been since they hatched, no problems really. Only thing is they occasionally catch a tooth on it when catching a cricket but it sure doesn't seen to hamper them or hurt them in any way. Never seen a toe catch on it, they run around chasing the crickets just fine And I do dust their crickets with vits & calcium, both are growing like weeds LOL

BlueLeo Aug 20, 2005 01:47 PM

i already explained to him that the crickets were to big, he gets the small ones and that was just the biggest one out of the batch.

vanillag Aug 20, 2005 07:42 PM

lol yesssss! He is normal. I wasnt sure if there were names for em er not. Im gona find a vet for him this week so I'll keep everybody posted, im sure he is healthy. He is getting even more comfortable in my hands, and even started to climb up my arms last night. So he seems happy and enjoying himself.

So cute!!

I have no babies this season due to taking the season off, so I've gotta live vicariously through everyone else -- my youngest are 6 months or so (resuces courtesy of the Humane Society)

I'm so happy to see a new herp that is not on sand! Nice.
