Fecal test for sick collared... negative?

platinumtlc Aug 19, 2005 12:10 PM

I dont understand. The fecal test for my collared that has been lethargic for weeks came back negative. It cant be. What else could the reason be for the diahrea and him being lethargic?
Old age? Im pretty sure he isn't that old. What do I do? Maybe the fecal wasn't fresh enough? Maybe they didn't test it right? I guess I should be glad it's negative, but now I'm at a complete loss as to why my precious collared is sick!

Why are they prescribing meds for reasons that don't exhist. I would be telling them to take back the flagyl and Panacur...or whatever they gave you. I thought the test was positive and that was shy they prescribed it. Did they explain themselves.

Your lizard could just be stressed. Malnurished and dehydration
can wipe out a lizard pretty quick. I know firsthand.

So what do I do? Call and give back the meds? Stop giving them? Should i just stop giving the panacur and meta and just give the carnivore care thing?
Should I bring a fecal sample again?

This just my opinion, and others may feel differently about this, but I would give the lizard eveything. He may very well have a parasite load, even with a negative on the fecal. Over the years I have found it advantageous to periodically treat wild caught collareds prophylactically. My vet recommended that I rotate giving them Panacur and Flagyl every couple of weeks if sick, less often if apparently healthy. I noticed that if I went a long time without treating them, their weight would often drop and then pick back up again after treatment.

For the very, very sick collared lizard that I am treating now, I am using Baytril, which is an antibiotic (she has an obvious infection over her eye), Panacur, and I will administer Flagyl in a week. Already after five days of treatment (along with supportive care for nutrition and hydration) I have seen a DRAMATIC improvement. We didn't even bother with the fecal since all evidence pointed to parasites.

In short, yes, give the medicines.

Make sure the lizard is well hydrated by giving water by hand, and be sure it is eating, too. I have even had to tube feed mine because she was too sick to eat at all.

So is this what I should do?
-Continue giving the Carnivore Care Packet powder mix.
-Continue giving the Panacur as pescribed.
-Continue giving the Metronidazole as pescribed.

Now he isn't eating any crickets or waxworms on his own, but he has not lost any weight either. He is very meaty. He still basks in the light.

Should I give water by a syringe too in addition to the carnivore care powder mix? Or should the carnivore care powder mix be enough?

Should i find another vet to bring him to once again? How do I get baytril?

This is crazy.

I would definitely give him as much water from a syringe as he'll drink. I like to get at least a total of 1 cc in a sick collared lizard everyday; this is in addition to whatever food he's is getting.

Do give Panacur and Flagyl. I am on the fence about the Baytril, though. If you don't have it then you pretty much have to get it from a vet, or at least get a prescription to order it on line. However, if there is no solid proof of a bacterial infection, administering antibiotics may not help him.

Make sure he is getting enough to eat. If it isn't voluntary, then force feed him. The fact that he has some fat reserves to start with is good--just don't let him get thin. As I've mentioned in the past, I give my sick lizards (the ones that won't/can't eat) a paste made up of a prescription canned dog/cat food and calcium, vitamins, and water. I am guessing that the powder mix that you have is like my mixture. Try to get about 1 cc of that into him each day, too.

What is Flagyl? I only have the panacur and metaz thing. Should i be force feeding him that mixture you have?

Should I bring him to another vet or go back to this guy? Im so at a loss as to where to go for vets ive been everywhere.

lizard_lover Aug 20, 2005 11:16 AM

Flagyl is the metaz thing you have. Yours is just labelled with the generic name.

Give the mixture that you have, but make sure it has calcium as one of its ingredients in case its designed for mammals and not reptiles.

Treat your lizard with the medicines, continue to feed him, and see how he responds. If you don't see any improvement in a week, then I'd take him back to the vet. The last vet you saw seems to be okay; I'd take him there again.
