URGENT advice please!!!!!

danya Aug 19, 2005 04:07 PM

checked on the eggs about 2 hours ago, and one had started to hatch. just the nose sticking out, and noticed a very small movement (or i thought so anyways). I left it alone and checked on it an hour ago. Still no progress. When my leos hatch, they all have different progress, some are out within an hour of beginning, some take a whole night (but with constant movement or sign of life)

Now, 2 hours later, it's still in the same spot, no progress, no visible movement. I don't know if it died during the process, or if it's just resting, or if i should remove it from the shell.
Do babies ever need help getting out? With the leos, some bounce in and out. they get to a spot and creep back in, then move out more, and then retreat back in... constantly until it's got his front legs out. this hatchling is just doing nothing, for at least the last 2 hours.

If he's alive, i don't want him to die... i don't know if some actually take this long to move or take another step, but i don't know if i should help him out, or just leave it be and let nature run it's course.

ANY ideas??????? Thanks

Don't pull him out of the egg. It can take hours for the little guy to finally wiggle out of the shell, but he will. They take lots of breaks and naps during hatching, must be very tiring!

they can go for several hours with no movement? not a sign of life at all?

this is the first clutch of bearded eggs, but with the leo eggs, the could take all nite to hatch, but they never went more than a half hour or so without wiggling a little bit. he's only got just the tip of his nose out.

one more thing- i never really noticed or paid attention to the leos... would you be able to see them breathing thru the shell?

I could not see movement inside the eggs, give him a while and when his head is out he'll open his eyes. I took some pics of mine hatching (just heads out of the eggs) and the flash startled them and they wriggled right out of those eggs, so once they decide to actually come out it happens quickly.

This may be totally irrelavent....but I raise snakes, and it takes some hatchlings 48 hours...they can stay stock still for hours..??? I was surfing here because I just got a baby bearded two weeks ago.

he still hasn't moved AT ALL

will it hurt him to remove the shell at least partially too see if he's still alive/ to help him out?

The best thing to do is leave them alone. I know it is scary, but it is completely normal. I had 6 heads out of the egg all day and they did not come out until the next day. It can take a long time. Try not to worry.

I suggest just leaving it alone over night at least, as many times the hatchlings still have their yolk sack and will be absorbing it for some time even after pipping.

well, last nite at about 1 am, i felt the egg, and it was COLD (the eggs surrounding it were nice and warm though) and i gently peeled the shell away. about 15 minutes after getting him out of the shell and getting him warm, he started gasping for air his yolk wasn't attatched to the shell at all (i was very careful about that) and didn't touch him at all (held him through a paper towel). i was really positive he was dead because he didn't uncurl or anything.

around 6 today another egg started, and i just got home now and the baby was totally out and running around.

2 healthy babies so far, the first is doing very well
