What plants can be used?

mezmerize Aug 19, 2005 05:47 PM

Is it safe to use herbs like peppermint, lemon balm, etc. in my boxies pen? I ask because if they aren't trimmed back often, they become huge very quickly and are good for cover.

Those would not be my first choices, because of the aromatic oils they contain might prove to be irritating.

I planted rhododendron bushes. They tend to gow very bushy and offer cover. The habitat created below them is shady and moist. My boxies and spotteds love that part of their enclosure.

what part of the country do you live in? I live about 15 miles away from philadelphia PA so i might need to pot them so i can bring them inside for the winter. Are there any other plants that are more cold hardy?

I live 1/2 hour from Philly.

I also use the thin black mulch that fuses together. This holds moisture for when the boxies burrow.

I have 12 eggs some are spotted turtle and some are easterns. They are not going to hatch. They dented in and sropped developing. One or two still may hatch. I had them in top soil. I moved them because i didn't want the adults bury them sewlves and destroy the eggs or a bullfrog to eat them. I have been taking my turtles to a rehaber in southern DE and she captive breeds them and returns the young to the wild. Later in life I would like to do that. i am not ready yet. I really don't want to sell babies but i would to somemone from here. I don't have any. I live on the NJ side of the Commadore Barry bridge.

I have 3 strawberry patches in my enclosure, pothos(spel?) all over, rhododendron bushes, evergreen bushes, grape vines, yes, I have 1 peppermint patch, a few tomato plants for them. I have these pretty smaller bushes that Blossom in the spring - don't remember the name, but I've seen them used in Bosai pots. They can stand the coldest winters - just like a tree and they have different color flower plants - I have red, white & purple. I also have these grasses I plant near the water holes - They are tough as nails - green with a white stripe down the middle of each grass blade. Pretty & tough - great for boxies - They stay green year round. They are shown in the pics in a previous post (pics of my enclosure) Just have to be on top of it and constantly trim down the patches. BTW, I also have one huge berry tree that drops these berries all over the place. Including the yard. Step on them and you have a purple/blue stain. Annoying for me but good for the boxies.
