ESU Coil Lamps.. Yes or No?

drunkmike Aug 19, 2005 06:02 PM

I currently have a few of these as a friend of mine had a really fast bad experience with a few reptiles he was trying to keep so I got all of his lighting with less then a month on it. Are these ESU Super Coil lamps sufficient for UBV for a beardie? I currently have 2 of them in 2 reflector dome's (one on either side of a 4'3'3' cage) I would rather use a strip light, but I have a extremely old Lizard Lounge setup and the top of the tank is glass with no way to hold a strip light inside of the cage so thats why I'm doing it this way. What do you guys think? They put off very little heat, so I have them about 5-6" away from my beardies 2 favorite basking spots (one spot around 105 and the other around 95 just to give a little vareity :D) and it seems sometimes that she will try to angle herself JUUUUUUST right to be more under the Super Coil lamp rather then the heat lamp itself. Is that normal or does that mean that she is actually getting something from the UVB? Like I said I know they are only about 1 month old (not even really) so I know they are still good, I have just never used them before so what do you guys think?

Hey, I used to use these lights, but I have heard that they dont really supply enough UVB to your dragons (only about 3%). You are really better off using a strip light.

try Zoomeds compact florescent uvb bulbs. they provide 10.0 uvb up to 3 feet away (strips go about 12 inches generally) and last a year (strips need to be replaced every 6 months)and they screw into regular sockets

I am not trying to give you a hard time, personally. But this is the problem with companies like zoo med, they make baseless claims! Repti-Sun 5.0. What does the 5.0 stand for? 10 UVB? It's not even a real unit of measure!

The point of this post was to illustrate the fact that some of these companies have to rely on pulling the blinders over people to get them to believe in their product. Stick with companies that can support their claims with data that is free and open to the public! Check out my post below.
