How long can a Red-Spotted Newt survive without food? Need help quick!!!!

LordOfTheLizards Aug 19, 2005 07:12 PM

I was in my local forest/swamp yesterday, and caught 2 adult Red-Spotted Newts (I assume they are adults, since they are in the water (swimming) and brown, not orange like efts) I can only get food (mealworms) tommorow, will they survive before that? I have raw beef in my fridge (I read they can eat that) but am a little hesitant to feed them it, for fear of disease or something.

Will they sirvive? Or should I let them go (The swamp is about a 40 minute walk away, so I can't just go there for a few minutes) and I don't want to let them go in just the regular forest, since I doubt they will find the pond.

Thanks!

It depends on the temperature but a week or so at 75 or cooler would not be that traumatic.
I would suggest skipping the mealworms and using blackworms and/or live brine shrimp. Once they are feeding it shouldn't be too difficult to switch them over to frozen bloodworms.

Here is a pretty good care sheet.

Thanks.

Any idea where to get live brine shrimp or bloodworms? I live just north of Toronto, and have had trouble finding both,

Pet shops sell them. Or you can dig up earthworms. Serve them chopped to a suitable size.

Alright, well I went to my pet store, and got a pack of what was said "frozen blood worms". It was like a cardboard thing, with lots of small plastic boxes with tinfoil tops (like gum packets, but bigger) full of red. I just dumbed one of the packets in the water where they are, hopefully they will feed.

I'm getting the rest of the supplies soon.
