Fire Skink eggs, can anyone who has bred them help?

leapin4lizards Aug 19, 2005 07:20 PM

Hi, I wrote awhile ago inquiring on my newly added Fire Skink and my older one whther there behavior was aggressive or breeding. Turns out she got real fat and i went on vacation for a week and came back and now I have 7 eggs as i cleaned out their aquarium and found them. One looks great, the other 6 are a little discolored maybe pinkish?? They are all but that one good one..dented slightly. My one friend who as bred Leopard Geckos and Bearded Dragons says they are lacking humidity and should try hatching them anyway. They are in 2 inches of very moist but not wet soil in a critter keeper with a light above it (50 watt red basking)if I had the money right now would get an incubator but I can't. I have been reading again and very scant information on them. Their are varying temperatures mentioned, and one says to give them a day high of 86 to a night low of 78. the other says just keep at 83 or 84 but no other details. Any detailed advice ( how mosit, how to keep moist without getting eggs wet, temperature for day and night etc.) from soomeone who knows or can find out for me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks you..sorry so long.

Not sure if this is the one you found, but try this link. Not very much info out there.

Thanks, i already had the link though. I doubt I can do this without an incubator set up, though my friend has with leopard geckos and Bearded Dragons this primitive way. The egss are not dented now, the one good one looks the same the others more oblong and slightly pinkish. Anyone else with advice please write. Am i wasting my time doing this in a critter keeper?

From what I gathered from that care sheet the temps should be pretty managable. Maybe switch from soil substrate to vermiculite, but if you can control the temps and humidity I'd go ahead and try it that way. Good luck.

P.S. I'm in the market for a fire skink or two so keep me in mind when they hatch

I am not expecting them to hatch but if they do I will let you know. I guess I will try candleing them late this week to see how they are doing. I checked them today and the dents are gone, the 6 ofthem oblong and still off color, one looks good yet.

Try to keep them within the temp range in the care sheet, and try to keep the humidity at between 50-70%. Good luck.

P.S. Could you post a pic of the set up? Might give me a better idea of what's goin' on.
