Update on my Millie

lizard_lover Aug 19, 2005 07:25 PM

She has lived up to her name, that's for sure.

After five days of being in the intensive care unit for lizards--being medicated, tube fed, hydrated, and generally loved on, she is now out of her box, back in her regular home, and literally jumping around the cage.

She still has a little bit of that "sunken eye" look to her, but it is much improved, too. Of course all the bones in her little body are still clearly outlined, but I have confidence that she will regain her body condition with time.

Now I need help from you experienced breeders: how do I get a sick, emaciated lizard to lay eggs? I don't know if she will have the strength to do it yet, as she is still very weak. I am no longer worried that the malnutrition will kill her, but if she is egg bound then that could spell the end. Any advice? A pitocin drip perhaps?

Hello,
Well I'm no experienced breeder. Since she is a reptile I might not be worried as much about her not having strength to lay. Sometimes they will reobsorb the eggs back instead of laying, but I'm not positive collareds do that, but that would be my worry. How close do you think she is? Hopefully the malnutrition doesn't effect the eggs. We still haven't seen her picture.

Hope she make's it,
Morgan

well i think she is way too skinny to have good eggs in there, it would be best if she would reabsorb them which collareds can do because ivan did it last summer.
elan, do you know how far along she is? if she just turned gravid maybe in the next two weeks you can get her fat enough to dig. also i think i read something once and i don't know how reliable or realistic it was but it was something about them using a needle to reduce the size of the eggs. like i said, i really have no idea and it could have just been some quack article on the net

Ya know, I have no idea how long she's been gravid. She was heavy with eggs when I got her, and I have seen no signs of her reabsorbing them. If anything, she's gotten bigger.

I had an iguana that was eggbound and had to be treated sugically (a c-section, if you will), but I have serious doubts as to whether or not Millie would survive surgery.

How long can they hang on to eggs before it becomes critical?
