is there a significant difference in general temperament between male and female bps?

There's not really a temperament differnce between males and females, just a size difference. Like all other snakes, females will be larger than males. Ball pythons are some of the calmest and least likely to bite snakes that you can buy. In my experience dealing with them, the only time I've come anywhere close to being bitten was when I didn't let them settle long enough after they were fed. If they're still hungry and you try to pick them up, they can snap at you. Just give them enough time and you'll be fine.

As long as you don't buy a wild caught ball you most likely will get one with a very nice disposition. Yes there are some balls that are less "friendly" than the general population - rumor has it that females sometimes can be more aggressive than the males but I haven't really seen any difference.
