Can a ball python soak too much?

shadowmonkey01 Aug 20, 2005 12:21 AM

I put a larger water bowl into my each of my ball pythons enclosures this week, now one of my balls is always in the bowl, it's been 3 days now and I haven't seen him move, lays in bowl all curled up with nose out of water, will this result in scale rot, i had heard that it would? I thought he was dead really hasn't moved, guess he just likes it in there.

i understand that bps will stay in their water dishes when they have mites. check her all around and make sure this isnt the case.

yes they can soak to much,i recieved 8 imports that soaked for 2 weeks str8 and i never knew that was bad thing until i noticed they started getting water blisters so i immediatly took out there large water dishes and put dishes that all they could do was drink out of them.I NEVER saw a mite on any of them of course being wc the ticks were present on some but definitly not in abundance that would warrant a 2 week soak but after a few sheds they were fine

If they don't have mites and they are not going into shed. They useualy don't soak that long.

Do they have hides? Bp's like to curl up in tight places. I have notcied that if I set up a cage without a hide some will use the water bowl as a hide.

The only time I had any soak that much was when they had mites, you'll get crappy sheds with mites too, and when the hot spot under the hide got too hot, she came out and soaked in her dish to cool down.

General reasons for extended soaking are:

Mites
Pre shed
Too low humidity
Too hot or too cold
Burns or other injuries and maladies
It's the only place they feel secure in the cage (may need a new hide)

A good soak for a day or two is ok but make that you check him over real good and double check his encloser - rule out all of the above or make any needed adjustments. If he continues to soak take the big bowl out and put a small one in so he doesn't get blisters.

I have just recently been haveing this problem as well. Even though mites may be an issue, people just seem to automatically think it's the problem. Through looking around I found out that pythons sometimes just like to chill in the water for no reason. Although, I got a rock thing for it to crawl under yesterday, and it doesn't sit in the water anymore. I asked my best friend that has had one since I've known him, and before that. I've known him for at least 6 years. He says that he's had times when his will stay in the water for weeks at a time.

He came out last night while I was watching tv. But by this morning he was back in there. I guess as long as he comes out for a few hours every few days it's cool. He isnt looking bad anywhere so I guess he just likes it in there, might hafto switch his bowl every couple days so he doesnt overdo it though.
