Ball Python Question

redscool Aug 20, 2005 09:21 AM

Hi, I haven't really had any snakes before my first one, and I'm actually curious about something. I know they need water to help them digest their food and everything, but I thought they might sit in it just for a little while. My snake seems to be laying in it's water all time and I'm just wondering if this is normal.

It usually means the humidity isn't high enough it sits in it day after day. try misting the cage a few times a day to raise the humidity, but be sure not to make it to humid. By the way, there's a whole seperate forum just for ball pythons, so you could probably get more help over there than over here.

check for any tiny dark roundish objects in the water dish. If you see any then your ball python has mites.

neither does mine, but i am assuming maybe its a good sign??
the humidity in my bps enclosure ranges between 60% and 70% i see her drink and she will move through the water..... but i have never seen her just soak. i even put her in the dang dish thinking maybe she would get the hint, but she got out of it as soon as i put her in.

Sometimes they will try to cool off by sitting in the water too. Maybe you could alter your temps a bit and see if he stops soaking. These pythons come from arid regions in Africa and should only need a higher humidity in a hide, not the whole enclosure.

Ok, I wanted to update everyone on this. I now understand that they can sit in water for long periods of time just to do so. Also, I don't know how "mites" come into this topic, but I assure everyone this is not an issue. Moving on, I was paid the other day and thus bought a half rock for it to crawl under and all things concerning sitting in the water is over. Spends the majority of it's time under the rock.

Mites are a thing to look for with excessive soaking as i understand it becuase the mites make the snake uncomfortable and the coolness of the water helps reduce the irritation.

not saying that is your problem as others have said temps and even lack of hides can also be a reason.
