Snake newbie, with a few questions.

Jake_Jackson Aug 20, 2005 12:15 PM

Well, after a trip to a few different forums here and there around kingsnake.com I have come to a conclusion that a Kingsnake would be best for someone as myself.

Looking to keep the snake within a 30 long tank, and something thats docile, and easily tamed. Am I in the right forum?

If so, can someone request some good brands to use (products, cage makers, etc) And possible pictures of enclosures?

Thanks In advance.

Welcome to the world of King snakes... personally Florida kings are my favorite ssp.

i've owned cal kings, speckled kings, desert kings, black Mexican kings, Apalachicola kings , and Florida kings... i gotta say all have the tendency to be aggressive as neonates... with handling they calm down very fast.

Enclousre:

how many kings snakes are you tying to keep? one? if so a 30gal is more than ideal for an adult king snake... if you plan on getting a hatchling to raise up... you may want to start off with a smaller enclosure and step it up as your snake grows (plastic shoe box---> 10gal---> 30gal)

Special Brands:
i can't say i have any special brand of king snake products... really i don't think i buy any thing extra for my snakes.

With some bedding, a nice hide (cave), water bowl, maybe a rock (for shedding) regular feedings ( every 3-5 days) you snake should do fine

hope that helps

Everything Zenny just said is very valuable information. I too am relatively new to the whole snakekeeping hobby, but I have learned a ton from all of these guys on this website.

I am in love with the Florida Kings as well as the other Eastern Ssp. (Georgia, New Jersey, etc..). The only snake I have so far is a late '04 Hypo Brooksi, and she lives in a 40 gallon house right now, I just bought it for her last week, she was in a 15 gallon before. I don't have any special products or anything. Just fresh daily water, regular feedings (3-5 days)and maybe handling them once a day for 30 minutes or so ONCE they've gotten use to their new home, it should be a very happy, docile and tame snake. Here are a few pics. The pics of her house suck, but at least they give you an idea.Enjoy.

THat is a nice cage system, do you have specs for it? Did you build it yourself?

Yes i built it my self... when you say specifics what do you mean? like what materials or what the dimensions are?

i know it measures 31" X 17" X 63"... the sizes of each individual space varies... the smallest measures 31" X 17" X 5.5"

it started out as a stand for 4 20gal long tanks and then i got rid of the tanks added a few more levels and put 1/8" thick plexi-glass in the front... it's worked very well for me the only escapes i had from it was when i forgot to "lock it up" (latches at the sides) it holds 9 levels (don't think they all show up in that pic) but if i thought it through better it would have held a few more... i'm building another in a few weeks any way for the new stuff in my collection.

Actually, I wanted both bits of info, I want to build a once piece system with four levels to house my snakes. I am still debating whether to purchase or build. I have a friend that is a part time carpenter so either way would work. Thanks for any information you have.
