RETF male on male amplexis

gbjk Aug 20, 2005 03:37 PM

It sounds like a dodgy herpetology home movie, doesn't it?

Well - I have two RETFs. They're both young males, and I'm fairly sure they're both male (They both chirp).

Several times now I've come in on one of them in amplexis with the other one. I can't tell if it's the same one every time, but I'd expect so.

The one being mounted was struggling the other day, and eventually freed himself from the other one.

Is this normal?
Will it cause undue stress?
Can I help them avoid it?

Tonight when I went to put new crickets in their bowl, I took the one off the other one, to spare him what must have been discomfort. He wasn't struggling this time though, just sitting and enduring it, it seemed.

Thanks

G

well,I know with dogs and cats, amplexing can also be a dominance thing rather than anything sexual, perhaps it is with these two?I don't know how social retf's are,but maybe after being caged together,a group composed of whoever-can't-eat-each-other frogs starts making a pecking order of some sort

It's a possibility I'd considered.
They both seem happy together, they don't avoid each other, and frequently sleep next to each other or on each other.
