feeding / scenting with earthworms for eastern hogs ?

DeanAlessandrini Aug 20, 2005 04:42 PM

I just had a brief email conversation with Dan Felice...
apparently his baby eastern hog from AC loves earthworms!

He's scenting pinks with worms and it's sucking them down!

Anyone else try this?
Any more details Dan / AC?

You could be on to something here...

It is great to hear about yet another scenting method that works for Eastern hognoses! Although it does not surprise me given the diverse and vertebrate prey that have been documented in the stomach contents of eastern hognoses over the last 50 years, including grasshoppers, centipedes, and beetles. Who knows if they have been eating earthworms all along, they just don't last long enough in the stomach for people to find them.

In addition, at my last job we had a captive bred Eastern knows that would not only take unscented mice, but would gladly accept wax worms, crickets, and Mazuri brand reptile and amphibian gel (another hognose and our northern watersnakes would eat this as well).

There is a lady in the Uk that scents pinks with slugs to get corns to feed! She swears by it.

careful-a)last year i had an eatern hog eating unscented pinks with gusto.then suddenly died-seemed he could'nt digest them right(but he never regurgitated any)....b)also i have been warned by others that eastern hogs need their mice(IF you must feed mice)skinned since they can't pass the hair properly......c)i had a friend that fed a picky WESTERN hog small feeder guppies, against my advice.....it died maybe a week or two later....i.e. the only stories i hear often of e. hogs living long and thriving, are by people feeding toads, prefferably frozen thawed
