A lesson learned in the "bad egg" debate

RobHaneisen Aug 20, 2005 06:26 PM

One of my hypo females laid what looked like a stinker of a clutch. Three slugs right off the bat and then one that went bad about week later. So that left me with seven very iffy looking eggs. They were discolored, had windows, etc., but they did not collapse so I let them stay in the incubator. One of the ggs collapsed and turned all moldy about 50 days into incubation. On day 70 my patience was rewarded. Hypos started hatching from eggs that I was ready to start cutting into. Good things come to those who wait.

Here are some shots of the hatching and hopefully you can see how the eggs didn't look like your typical good eggs. Babies (three out so far) so far seem healthy and very nice.

Here's a close up of the nice hypo. The mom is anice vanishing pattern from Mike Falcon and the dad is a great male from Randy Whittington.

Great pics. Thanks.
I'm was holding out for the one pictured below, but I've just about given up hope. It's ugly. The remaining five look great. Btw, they're on day 65.

what is that you've used herein the pics,as substrate?looks like gravel or 100% perlite?and why are you using that instead of,say, vermiculite or even foam rubber cubes?

100% perlite is used by lots of people.

Update:

All six eggs hatched out! One baby is a vanishing, pinband super hypo (not quite extreme, but still very nice). One is kind of an intergrade between a tricolor hypo and tangerine hypo. The remaining four are nice clean tangerine hypos. I'll post some pics when they shed. Second clutches being laid and first clutches hatching. The most wonderful time of the year.

The substrate is perlite. I was using vermiculite last year but switched to perlite this year. Not noticing much of a difference other than perlite makes less mess.

ok,good to know.yeah the vermiculite is messy, true enough.thanks, just another option to consider.
