Temperature Spikes @ Near full term?

Sasheena Jul 17, 2003 02:54 PM

Well I've asked several times about temperature regarding my Apalachicola eggs. Well we discovered why the AC was working so hard and doing so little. We came back from the day away from the house to find the temperature indoors a little warmer than the ambient outdoor temperature (outside it was 110 degrees). The AC died for the night. The eggs were at 96 degrees. I cooled em down as best I could, by this morning they were at 92 degrees, and now they are at 83.7. One of the eggs is now hatching. It is day 51 of incubation. I know that soon enough I will know if the egggs are going to hatch that haven't started, and I also know that soon I will learn if they have been injured/deformed by the temperature spike. My hope is that the temperature spikes were more enough to hasten hatching but with no other ill effects. I'm crossing my fingers anyway.

There's a very good chance that they will all be born with a newly discovered defect resulting from temperature spikes during the last few days of incubation. In fact, I'd say there's a 100% chance. This new defect has no name. It also has no symptoms and no apparent effect on the snakes. In fact, nobody else knows about it. You'd better pack 'em all up and send them to me as soon as they hatch.

That's what I thought... nothing much else to do.

So far only one has slit the egg, sits there flicking its tongue and mocking my concern! The rest seem ready to hatch, but we'll see.

I think the worst thing about hatchlings is you have to just take what you get. Can't change what has already happened, and can't make a bad egg good. Just gotta do your best.
