Cool snake, even after eating

jammerz Aug 20, 2005 09:44 PM

My Corn Snake likes it cool. I recently finished a new vivarium that allows my snake a temperature variance of 68 degrees to 85 degrees. Even after he eats, a day later I find him down in his den at about 68 or 70 degrees. He turned a year old on 7/22/05 and is about 33 inches long. I give him an adult mouse every 6 days. He just seems to like it cool. Is he out of range or what? Any thoughts?

does he have a hide on the warmer side? if you only have one hide and its on the cool side chances are he'll spend all his time there.
i have a ghost corn in a 40 gallon breeder size tank with only a light for extra warmth and he doesn't seem to care one way or another. then i have an amel who uses his whole tank and will spend time over his UTH.
as long as your is eating/deficating he's doing fine.
personall mine don't seem to like it over 80 degrees anyways so maybe 85 is a bit warm for yours also.
just my thoughts.

Thanks for the response. Yes, he has hides all over the place. It is a 42" long by 24" deep and 27" high with a tunnel leading to a den 3 feet below the bottom of the viv. (I should post pics). I use aspen and lizard litter with natural rock hides and logs, with a curl of bark and some plastic plants. I have the curl of bark on a wooden ledge half way up the side at the back. I also have a "tree" he can climb to get the ledge. He has used all of this stuff but often ends up in the den on the floor. The main level is about 78 degrees. It only gets up to 85 if he climbs the tree to get to the ledge.

Yeah, he is cool. It is whatever he wants. The more natural the better. After all, I caged him up. His choices about what he has to slither around on and what temp he can be at are all up to me. I don't have pics of Motega, but I will post pics of the viv maybe tomorrow.
