Beardie attacking tank mate.

scotsdragon Jul 17, 2003 02:58 PM

I have two beardies about three months old. Recently the slightly larger one has been showing signs of aggression & has attempted a bite towards the other's facial area.

No damage has been done but i'm wondering if this is quite a common show of dominance? Apart from this they both co-habit well & it has only happened a few times.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I keep all my beardies in separate enclosures so I don't have to worry about fighting. Are the dragons two males? If they are you will have to separate them. If it is a male and a female, you should separate them unless you want babies running around. And from what I've heard, the male could get overly agressive and stress the female out. The only way that I have heard to safely house two dragons is if they are two female of about the same size.

Good luck with this. There's really only one way to make sure dragons get along .... separate them. That's just my two cents worth.

How do they get along if their separated?

Surely loads of people keep two or more tegether?

I personally would split them up cause it's going to end up with one hurt or dominated and stressed, and under fed. Do you know what sex the dragons are?

Their organs are not prominant enough to be definate about their sex. I know what to look for but i am still anivice really. One looks male & one looks female but like i say they are developed enough yet.

I don't really have the splitting up thing as an option.

I can't stress enough how important it is to split them up. The one being continually attacked will stress, could quit eating, and worse case senario ... fail to thrive. I would hate to see that happen to your dragons. Is building a home made structure possible? I didn't have the room for three 55 gallon tanks sitting around my small apartment, so I had to build something.

If splitting them up is truly not an option, I would consider getting rid of one of them. If they are male and female they should not be together. It is not healthy for them to breed before 18 months of age. To do so would greatly shorten the females life. Are they relatively the same size? If they are two females, you may be okay, but better safe than sorry. I had a male and female (adults) together and the male was too aggressive. I thought it was part of his 'mating' ritual. I came home from work one day and he had torn up her arm. The vet told me that if she lived (he gave a less than 50% chance) she would lose her leg. After intense nursing (warm soaks, antibiotics orally and on the bites, handfeeding) and $300.00 later, she is well. Her bites took a good three-four months to heal. I had to learn the hard way and she suffered for it. I would hate to see the same happen to your little ones.

In a pinch, you can buy large a rubbermade container and house one in there.
People rarely house anything but 2 females together, and sometimes that doesn't work out either.
2 males will definately fight and won't stop, only worsen as they get older.
A male and a female could possibly mate... too early will cause health problems and give you even more beardies to deal with.
If you can get a rubbermade and a clamp light, 20 minutes of real sun a day will be fine until you can get another UVB light.

yep.. i love rubbermaid.. granted almost all of my lizards are in glass tanks.. but i bought a 50 gallon rubbermaid at target last week.. cut out the inside part of the lid and riveted on some hardware cloth for the screen.. it wasn't for a beardie but this would work well for one.. it only cost me 15 dollars all together and took maybe about 20 mins to do..
