Do snakes need dechlorinated water?

buffysmom Aug 21, 2005 10:20 AM

Just wondering if I really need to be "prepping" all this water every week...

i have used tap water for mine and they are fine. they say to let the water set out over night to help 'whatever' evaporate from the water. i just fill my snake bowls. by the time they get around to drinking it its been setting out anyways.
i do use bottled spring water for my fire bellies and anoles however.

First you need to find out if they put Chloramine into the water. This Ammonia compound keeps Chlorine in solution much longer than non treated water.

Amquel is good for removing Chlorine in such situations. Treat and let stand for 24 hrs before using.

I lost a couple of animals to Chlorine poisoning from tap water. Water snakes and Amphibians can be very sensitive. If in doubt, call your water company.

Also check for Fluoridation. This is deadly to Fish and likely is not good for your snakes either.
