My hubby is a carpenter, using ideas from deer fern farms furniture quality encloures, he is going to undertake some for my leos, our dilemma is since leo's need belly heat what have some of you done to incorporate your undertank heat? the deer fern farms ones are made for uromastix....but with modification I think they would be beautiful and much more space for my leos.

Im wondering if cutting in and placing tempered glass in one area with a raised floor would work and then linoleum or a similar material that could easily be washed and disinfected cut to fit.....

Would really love some practical feedback...............
Thanks
Sue

Sue,
what do you use as substrate and for heat? I have heard of placing glass over flexwatt. You could tape it to the flooring of the cage then place a peice of galss over it, then your substrate. Is there a web site for the cages you mentioned? I'm looking into purchasing some uros after my next show in July.

I've seen rack systems that have routed slots for the heat tape, with a strip of plexi glass fitted over it.

You could always make the whole floor out of a sheet of plexi glass and simply run the heat tape underneatch. Just make sure to leave a bit of room for air flow.

does it plug in? and do you have a thermostat attached?

what about plexiglass melting? transferring heat as compared to glass?

thanks

You can get heat tape from BeanFarm.com, it comes in different widths to suit your needs.

Heat tape can get VERY hot, so you need to use a thermostat or some type of dimmer to control the temps.

It does need to be wired, you can purchase everything you need at beanfarm.com, if you call them on the phone they will also answer any questions you may have about assembly, etc. Its all very easy.

Yes, it does plug in, but you have to attach the cord, I use dimmers for my gecko rack systems and thermostats for my ball python racks.

I dont think you have to worry about the plexiglass melting, it is very durable material. I dont think heat tape can even get hot enough to melt plexiglass, but with a dimmer, thermostat you should not have a problem. Not too mention if the tape was hot enough to melt the plexiglass, it would be WAY to hot and probably will cook your herps.

I've never used plexiglass myself, but it should transfer the heat just fine.

Take care.

of the enclosures, similar to inland dragons or which I also keep.

Did you go to the website? arent they beautiful?
The units are built to stack so they can be rearranged etc and restacked if needed.

I love all reptiles! they are so awesome and different!

Too bad I like rodents or I would be a corn snake keeper too, just cant do the mouse thing, not even frozen.....

Thanks again!

this is one of the attributes of the leo's they are neat about "where they do it" makes it soooooooooo easy to keep things clean. If only I could teach the crix to do the same hate crix poo dots all over my nice clean sand.......grrrrrrrr

thanks for the ideas....maybe heat tape and tempered glass or plexiglass with beveled cuts into the floor so that the glass sits flush.

My girls, sisters sasha and monyia who live together and love eachother, sleep all over eachother, so far no dominance issues they are almost a year old....will love more space to roam...

Dale my guy lives alone in a tank below them on my rack.
Old pic of Sasha when she was much younger, she is still soooooo pretty! have to post a current pic soon......

furninture quality, so they would "blend in" to the house, my animals are currently in our "toyroom", glass tanks on metal racks which is ok, but since i have a talented spouse I want to take advantage of his skill...see the website...they are amazing.
