Where's my baby???? Egg question

crestygecko Aug 21, 2005 03:47 PM

Hi all, I have sucessfully incubated crested geckos for over a year now but recently ran into some tough situations. What happens is that the egg begins to sweat (at around 60 days, temp between 71-76 f) and everything looks fine, then the sides of the egg begin to dent, and then nothing. Someone told me once to wait about 80 some days and I did. After that I got upset so I opened the egg and found a small baby gecko, not moving and dead. His eyes were black and he was not moving. It has happend to m with 5 consecutive eggs now and I have no idea what is going on. These eggs are super plump and white, they look great but I dont know what to do, any advice is STRONGLY suggested, and I am greatly appreciative to all.

the first thing to do is visit your husbandry practices. be sure your laying females are atleast 35 grams or heavier and haven't laid more than 8-10 consecutive clutches without resting.
i'm assuming the eggs are fully calcified.
the last thing i would do is empty your incubator, and redo your laying medium. i personally used 1:1 vermiculite to water by weight. this is as high as you'd ever want to go for humidity in the incubator.
finally, never spray the eggs directly, always add water around the eggs and let your females set out of laying for a few months out of the year.
