What type of tortoise should I get?

Sarah_Spencer Aug 21, 2005 04:04 PM

About a month ago my boyfriend bought me an african spurred thigh tortoise, but he stopped eating & the vet couldn't figure out what was wrong soon enough, so he died ...Mind you, I did do alot of research before hand, but I want another tortoise, but I can't decide what I want...I was looking at the russian tortoises, but their shell pattern is kinda plain looking...I also was looking at the indian star tortoises, but I couldn't find much info on them...If anyone has any suggests or info on these tortoises or any other tortoises that are docile & not too expensive please reply

Can you give us a better idea what you have as a setup? Will the tortoise have a lot of outdoor space or be primarily indoors? What size tort do you have in mind? There is a huge difference in size between Russians, Stars, and the African Spurred that you had. If you can let us know the size you are looking for, your setup and climate, I'm sure we will have some recommendations.

Well 1st off I'll say that I live along the coast of MA, so I don't think I could keep a tortoise outside year round, but I would put it outside on any day warm enough. Right now I have a 20 gal. long tank, but I'm sure that the types of tortoises I'm interested in will out grow that sized tank, so I'm prepared to build a tortoise table that will be housed in my room mostly likely, but I have the whole upstairs to myself, so I would also allow it to roam around the room I'm in for exercise. I have no problem offering it plenty of greens because I also own 2 bearded dragons. Of course, I have a UVA/UVB bulb, a spotlight & heating pads. I have realized that indian star tortoises are too expensive for my price range. I think the russian tortoise might be for me because my local reptile shop has them for $75 & they are pretty well established @ 5 inches long, but I would like to find out more info on them. If any could recommend a good book & where to find it, that would be helpful. thanks

A redfoot is a great tort. I have mine in a 240g acrylic tank. Now she is outside in the backyard but on cold nights and seasons shes in the tank.

I am currently selling my Redfoot tort , I dont have the time IMO to properly care for her at the current pace of school and work. Just decided to get my next degree, alot more work that I was expecting for courses
