hog shed, still has blue eyes?????

repzoo44 Aug 21, 2005 06:42 PM

my western just shed and still has very blue eyes. I checked the shed and it has eyecaps on it. Is this a buildup of old eyecaps or what. Ive never seen this before. Thanks for your help.

Can you post a pic of the eyes?

repzoo44 Aug 21, 2005 10:01 PM

unfortunately i cant get pics on my computer right now, in a timely manner anyway, but the eyes are very cloudy, the way it looks at its peak during the shedding process before it clears up. any thoughts?

My thoughts are that most people who ask this question usually don't realize how long it takes for a hog to shed (longer than usual) and ASSUME it has shed and think it still has cloudy eyes. If you, on the other hand, have the shed skin in hand, then I don't have an explanation. Give it a few more days, and watch for any changes in behavior.

eyes are definitely cloudy and I do have the skin with eye caps. I have had snakes for 20 years now but this is my only hognose. Ive never seen this before, thought maybe it was a hog thing??? or something like that. Ill let you guys know if anything happens.

I have seen them do this before. I have had them shed then the eyes stayed in the blue. A week later they shed out again. Im not saying this is what your snake will do just what ive seen in the past.

Sounds like retained eye caps, could be as many as two or three. I had a southern do this last year. I put him in wet sphagnum moss to soften them up and then removed them with tweezers under a magnifying glass. I checked them out under the microscope and it looked like a bacteria colony between eye caps. I now check for eye caps every shed.
