A real " Newbie " Question

hevychevy427 Aug 21, 2005 07:08 PM

Can the size of the crickets intimidate a small dragon? My sister and I purchased dragons from the same breeder at the same time. They are set up similar. Hers eats 8-9 crickets a day and mine will only eat 4-5...it eats 2-3 and then just sits there and watches them. I feed him 2 times a day, and she only feeds hers cricketsa at night. We both feed in seperate containers, not in their habitats. Mine has a dayglo basking light and an 8.0 UVB tube. He is approx 5-6 " away from the light sources. He has rocks, drift wood and a waterbowl..he is very active and is always "landscaping" his floor...Playsand. Any advice would be appreciated. The crickets are mediums....about 1/2" or so.
Thanks
Nancy

we'll i consider myself still a newbie owner myself ,so i'll tell you what i have experienced with my little guy.i feed him twice a day since he now about 8 inches (i got him he was around 7 inches)he eats 2-4 crikets each time .also make sure you powder your crickets (calcium, vitamins).i do mine every couple of days.i feed him in his tank but i take every thing out except him.I read on here some eat 20 or more a day.my guy doesnt,he still a youngin.too big of a cricket will result in impacting and i gave mine large ones up front (bad move) which resulted in his legs and arms twitching.i switched to small crickets and that helped tremendesly.my local petshop only carries small or large crickets.they say crickets no larger than the space between their eyes i beleive, also gut load your crickets, use uva bulb and uvb,i use some kind of nut shell that didnt work ,(impaction)
i swithed to newspaper for now.i hope this helps and my tips i beleive are right they are from advice i received here and reading books.
good luck

it sounds like your crickets are too big. need to use small crickets for that size of dragons. A good rule of thumb is the cricket should be no larger than the space between your dragons eyes. also, i wouldnt recommend putting your dragons on sand when they're still that small. I'm sure somebody else will add more...

Thanks..I will get him smaller crickets tomorrow right after work...he is moving his bowels and urinating...like snakes do. So I guess we are still OK in that respect. I will also dust his crickets every other day...I read you can over do the calcium and vitamin D-3.

I think most people who say you can over do the Calcium supplements easily, are refering to Adult bearded Dragons, who will start to develop nasty calcium deposits.

As long as you're not being rediculous with the supplements, should be alright, I think. Growing beardies need it.

Please Correct me if I am wrong.
