Any advice on sick AS?

fourcoolcrowes Aug 21, 2005 10:48 PM

Hi - My husband has had an AS for about 3 years, and he's develpoed some kind of fungal/bacterial infection. It looks like his skin is sloughing off, and it's turning an ugly pink/tender look around his neck. We have been doing soaks in aquarium salt, and we bought some aquarium meds at Petco today (Fungal Aid?). He is in a 55 - very well filtered - and he's still eating / acting fine.

Thanks for any help in advance!

A good website on treating turtles is austinsturtlepage.com. Under medical conditions. You might want to turn the filter off while using the fungus treatment. The charcoal will remove the medicine. Or treat him in a smaller tank. goodluck

Do I need to say more? Have you located a herp veternarian yet? www.arav.com, or call your local vet clinic for a referral.

It sounds like your turtle is a close family pet. Sometimes problems remain minor, and snappers are great healers, but from your description it is hard to tell what exactly is going on. The redness could be a simple rash, or it could be a sign of septicemia. You would be doing your turtle a favor by seeking qualified advice at a vet office.
