Any Central Ohio Tortoise/Bearded Dragon gurus?

pavochavo Aug 22, 2005 11:13 AM

Are there any central Ohio herpers out there? My name is Aaron. I am 25 and have been a reptile nut since the day I could walk. I currently own seven pancake tortoises (1 male, 2 female adults and four babies that I hatched, 1 male red foot tortoise and 11 baby red eyed tree frogs. I will be aquiring shortly two baby bearded dragons and a pair of cherryheaded red foots.

Does anyone make custom cages around here? I am not one for craftsmanship or I would do it myself. I am wanting something for my soon to be aquired beardeds.

Also, are there any tortoise owners here on the board? I am curious to see how others raise their tortoises in this climate.

Sorry for the broad strokes on this post. I'm just glad to have found this board.

Thanks for reading!
Aaron

Hi,

I live in Columbus as well, and the only place that I am familiar with that does custom caging is Captive Born Reptiles on Morse Rd. I am not a big fan of his practices on husbandry and such but he is the only one that I know that does it.

Hope this helps.

Chris

I actually know the owner of that place somewhat. Not a friend or anything by any means. His husbandry practices are pretty questionable. They used to be so much better at the old location. Now it is just plain sad. He doesn't even run the place hardly at all from what I am told. He basically lets a couple younger people take care of the place. Sad really.

Do you own beardeds or tortoises? Just curious. If not I am assuming you are a snake person?

Hi,

Yeah I agree completely. Terry simply just lets that place go to crap and his animals have to pay the price. No I dont keep any currently, although I used to have a bearded dragon that I thought was really cool.

I live in Columbus as well, being a student at OSU. I have only kept a handful of tortoises, focusing mainly on turtles since the climate is not hospitable to most species. I have kept Testudo horsfieldi (Russian tortoises) and Testudo hermanni here. For a couple years I hibernated the T. horsfieldi outdoors on a well-drained hillside that I ammended with course sand to improve drainage. I then kept them indoors in large opaque cement mixing tubs with a clay/sand mixture for much of the year. I did the same with the T. hermanni. Email me at graziano DOT 6 AT osu DOT edu if you'd like to talk more about chelonian care in Ohio.
