housing males together

Grish Aug 22, 2005 10:37 PM

I am in the process of building a large cage to house my cresties. The dimensions will be 2.5'W x 3.5'H x 1.5'D. I have four cresteds and two of them are males. I just finished reading in the Rachodactylus book by deVosjoli, Fast, and others, that you should not house males together.

Just wondering if any of you house males together, and if they've had problems. I know in a "perfect world" you probably shouldn't house them together, but I'm also trying to be a little practical, while keeping the animals' safety in mind, as well.

While the dimensions are very generous, I still wouldn't risk housing to males together. They will definately fight. I would sell one of the males and pick up a female. A harem of 1 male and 3 females would be nice in that tank. But I have even heard of females fighting amongst eachother. So definately keep an eye on them and be prepared with another vivarium to separate them.

in reality all will fight. i've had a female bite another females tail off.
i've also tried keeping multiple males in enclosures smaller than what you mentioned.
it wasn't necessarily the fighting between the two that i noticed, but both will become stressed and likely lose a substantial amount of weight because they try to avoid one another.

O.k., thanks y'all. I was kind of afraid of that. Looks like I'll be getting a new herp for this cage.
