What did I buy at the Daytona Show?

Jeff Clark Aug 23, 2005 12:56 AM

...I was not intending to buy any animals at the show. A friend had a pair of very very skinny Argentinian Rainbows on his table that needed to be saved so I bought them. I do not need the male but had to take him to get the female. I will fatten the female up and make sure she is okay over the next five months and hopefully have her ready to introduce to my "pet" male ARB this coming season. The new male will live a life of luxury here for awhile and then have to go earn his keep elsewhere. They both ate a fat rat pup each this evening.
....It was a great show. We vendors were afraid that after the hurricane problems last year and lower than expected sales the year before that this show might not continue to be the biggest and the best. The crowd came back as big as ever. Sales seemed to go pretty well for most vendors. The wholesalers and dealers were eager to buy wholesale lots of BRBs. I could have sold a bunch more of them if I had had them. There has been a many years long waiting list for new vendors for this show. Quite a few vendors did not renew for this year and so there were many new vendors at the show.
...There were lots of exciting animals to see. IMO Ricardo's Amelanistic Colombian Rainbows were the rarest and most exciting animals at the show. I heard several rumors about someone working with amelanistic Brazilian Rainbows. Several people seem to be close or are now producing anerythristic BRBs. I did not see any at this show. I have seen a few of them at past shows and they are very interesting. Bryan Hummel had a Hypo BRB and several hets at his table. These really are beautiful snakes. Bryan has some fantastic large format photos of BRBs. His full color handout is outstanding. His baby normal BRBs are very nice. John (sorry I can never remember his last name) from East Bay Vivarium told me he is expecting a couple litters of Hypo BRBs soon. Brian Sharp has Anerythristic BRBs and Amelanisitc CRBs on his new pricelist. He had his Calico/Piebald male BRB on display again this year. Paul Mitchell had several pretty adult BRBs for sale including an abberant "tiger" pattern one. Several vendors had baby BRBs for sale. I talked to David Fabius from Uraguay. He now has an Epicrates cenchria hygrophilus but has been unable to find a mate for it. He is going to breed it to a BRB if he does not find a mate for it soon. AFAIK this is the only hygrophilus in the hands of a private breeder.

I'm sure if I went I would have bought something! I bought something just before the show as I previously mentioned. A female Hog from Paul Mitchell. We will be working out the shipping anyday now. He said that the tabby (as us cat people say)would be going. Something about that fella captures my attention. It sounds like he wasn't sold from your post. I'm curious what you thought about him. Well, what did you think of him?

I would love to see Ricardo's collection. Do you have any pics? I would be thrilled to see those. As far as the Anery's, I was under the understanding that these were being somewhat regularly produced and for sale along with hets from Brian Sharp. I am not decided on whether that calico is a genetic trait or aberrancy and whether or not it appeals to me.

Bryan's hypos are something I'd certainly like to see. Maybe I can soon actually physically see them (he is the shortest distance from me). I would also like the go see the Barker's stuff. These forementioned folks are the only reasonable distance for me at the current time. While I would be on tour I'd sure try to see what's happening at Riobravo Reptiles. Bryan is an excellent photographer....I hope he continues with his photography and sends me a brochure.

As far as the Epicrates cenchria hygrophilus, I must admit, I have NO idea what that is.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Linda

P.S. when I heard of the tiger striped BRB going I wondered what you'd think of him...or if you'd come home with him.

Linda,
...I keep very busy at the Daytona Expo. I try to get a look at all the animals. I am interested in most everything that people bring so it takes some time to see everything. I can not get away from my table for too long so there is just no time to take PICs. Ricardo said he would email PICs of the amelanistic CRBs so that I can post them here on the forum.
...The Hog Boas I saw on Paul's table looked like good ones. His abberant BRB is very pretty. He also had several other nice looking adult BRBs, including siblings of the abberant one for sale. As per usual Gus had lots of nice Boas. I was especially interested in Hog Boas at his table because a friend here in Savannah has started shopping for them.

I tell you what Jeff...this year's show was perfect timing! Had it been this weekend yall would have had a freakin' rerun of last year. Hurricane Katrina just finished crossing South Florida and is now merrily headed our way. :P

Morgana,
...Are you in the panhandle? I have relatives all over Florida. All of them had hurricane damage last year. I thought I was lucky but we have timeshares (inherited the darned things)in Daytona and New Smyrna and they hit us with hurricane damage assessments. Nothing worse than writing extra checks for something you don't use. Let's hope this hurricane does not do too much damage.
Be safe,
Jeff

I'm so sorry I just now saw this post Jeff. No, I'm in the Tampa Bay area, but I own river property in the "Big Bend" area of North Florida that catches hell from 'canes on a regular basis. I'm about to sell it...I've had it with the flooding and such.

I'm also going to sell my home here in Tampa Bay and move to my woods up in Georgia. M
