Broken foot?

platinumtlc Aug 23, 2005 12:40 PM

How do I tell if my collared has a broken foot?

and YES this is the SAME collared that was lethargic, had the eye infection, etc etc so no surprise another problem has arisen.

His back left foot, I guess it would be his ankle part, is swollen. When he walks, he sort of drags/picks it up instead of actually walking on it. That foot had 2 toes that were bigger than the rest of the other toes. So is it broken? I'm pretty sure nothing fell on it. Infection? I dunno.

But he HAS been getting better, his left eye is actually opening now voluntarily. He's moving more, and yesterday he had a SOLID POOP! So hopefully things are getting better.
I'm bringing him in tomorrow to check his foot and breathing.

Things sound much better! I'm glad to hear he's moving around more; that's a really good sign.

About his foot--based on your description, my guess is that it's probably an infection. Keep him on the Baytril and see if the vet recommends doing anything for it (like lancing it).

Don't forget to report back and let us know what he says.

One of my Cory's back legs was a littler puffier than the other; although he still seemed to use it an extent the leg wouldn't retract back like his other back leg when I pulled at his foot. Eve recommended I make sure he's getting enough calcium & D3 and its back to normal.

I was thinking this as well.
When he used to chase crickets they were dusted every other day.
Now feeding him the powder mix the vet gave me, I have been mixing in calcium. Should I put more calcium in the mix or continue with like a teaspoon full? The powder mix is usually 1 teaspoon full of powder, 2-3 teaspoons of water, and 1 tsp of calcium.

and he took an xray and said it is due to low calcium. He prescribed me calcium glubionate to give one drop every 12 hours. He also said he didn't see anything that pointed to upper respitory infection he says his problem with breathing has to do with the lack of calcium.

So I am going to continue mixing in the calcium powder with the carnivore care powder, and give the calcium drops as pescribed.

You know, I had the thought that it might be MBD too, but for some reason I thought it just happened overnight (or at least over a couple of days). I have seen lizards with bones broken completely in half, deformed limbs, swollen limbs, and useless limbs, all as a result of MBD. Fortunately, every one of them I have been able to nurse back to health.

I am very happy that you have been able to take him to the vet as he's needed it. You're a good lizard parent.

Awww lol thanks I try. I get so upset sometimes because I work at a petstore and I sell reptiles all the time and I know more than half of them would never take their animal to the vet. It's sad. I would feel so guilty if my collared died and I didn't do my best to get it better.

Do you think the breahting problem is not URI and just related to the calcium? This is the 2nd time I brought it up to him and he didn't think it was. I dunno I just think he has it and maybe I'm just paranoid I dunno lol

Breathing problems are one of the few collared ailments that I don't have any experience with. Sorry about that.

I always thought it would be hard to work in a pet store for that very reason--that and the fact that a lot of the store owners don't even care about the animals. Sad.
