NEED HELP FOR SPUR SIZE SEX IDENTIFICATION.........

biggworm Aug 23, 2005 12:54 PM

I orginally purchased my blood as a female, and about a year ago I sexed him to be male.I'M HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS AGAIN..The reason I say that is because he is getting so huge and I only feed him once a month /every five weeks.I know that spur size and tail shape isn't 100% reliable way in sexing bloods.I JUST WANT YOUR OPPINION BASED ON THE PICS till I have him sexed at the vet. Thanks for your time. ASH LOPEZ

Yeah it is my male.Supposably.I probed him to be male but he keeps getti'n so bigg, and I haven't seen spurm plugs.Maybe I don't know what to look for.If he's a she that would be good news.So what's your final verdict, till I take em to the vet? Ash

Well my big girl has big spurs and so does my male, so I think your SOL until you get him probed.Rosey boas are the only ones you can depend on the spurs. If its a girl you'll be totally stoked, don't you already have enough males.Keep us informed.Later, Ethan

I have seen males with small spurs, one spur, and no spurs. If it is a large, tame male, it should be fairly easy to probe and will probe to a depth of at least 2.5 inches.

Ash, females are supposed to be 2-5 and males 6-12. I've heard a few different estimates so thats just kind of an average of all that I've heard. Make sure that the snake is not clamping down on the probe when you do it, apparently bloods do that a good bit. As far as tail length, spurs, and growth rates, they dont seem to have anything to do with sex's in bloods. Females are "supposed" to get bigger but you could have a big male from a clutch. I've got a little trio and the male is like twice as big as the females. Also have a pair that probe correctly and I have visibly seen hemipenis on the male and homolongs on the female many times. They grow at the same rate and spurs and tail length are identical. The best way is to probe it I guess, or if you can somehow get it to evert it's privates that would be even better. Good luck bro.
