Unknown Genetic hatchlings finally arrived!

tomsiegrist Aug 23, 2005 01:08 PM

This is a long story that some may remember. I picked up 3 Corns at a yardsale. The owners were moving but were not present, a friend was selling their stuff. I picked up a huge female corn, Male Anery and female Amel, all breeder sizes, for $50. They couldnt tell me the genetics.

I posted pics of the large female because she didnt look normal. Most on the forums said she was a GPR x Normal cross. I bred her the the Anery male and received 16 huge eggs from her. 6 went bad. Sunday after getting home from Daytona I noticed some hatchlings. I got 2 Gray, (Anery?) and 4 normals. One dead in the egg. I still have another deli cup with 3 more eggs that have not hatched.

So, they look Anery but a little different. I am not sure if it is because of the GPR influence or maybe some other genetics at work here. I will post pics of the Female, Male Anery then the hatchlings. Any ideas??

you can probably assume that on of the parents of the "rootbeer" corn was a snow, and thus most likely het for amel. if she is, you can also assume that the anery male is not het for amel. you can check this when the eggs from your amel female hatch. i predict you will have all normals, and possibly some anerys from your amel female.

true...true. I hate trying to guess the genetics. It was pretty cool when I saw that first anery. Thanks.

I dont think you really can. I was assuming that the female is het Anery. I also put that male to my Amel female. Her eggs are due to hatch September 20. If a snow comes out, then I know that both the male and the Amel female were het snow. If only normals are born then each were just Homo for their respective genes.

So in regard to the snow gene, I have to wait to see what comes out of the Anery x Amel.

Actually, you still wont be able to tell the genetics of the GPR female with the exception of the het Anery. Does that make sense?

i assume that the rootbeer corn would be het for amel as well, because most people breed amel corns to GPRs to create creamsicles. In this case, it is het anery, so i would think it safe to assume on parent was a snow, and thus het for both anery and amel. i know it is not proven yet, but it is very likely that it is het amel as well as anery.
